U13’s inflict rare defeat on Rhiwbina

Tale of 2 halves for the Ath U13’s as they welcomed Rhiwbina to Newbridge Field.
The first half started with the Ath on the front foot with their forwards winning the ball at rucks and in the loose.

The first time the Ath had possession, good handling along the back line put Rhys H free out wide, who ran in under the posts with Charlie R kicking the conversion.

The rest of the half was the Ath putting Rhiwbina under pressure with good defence out wide and turning the ball over with the forwards. Even though we created a number of good chances none of them were taken and Rhiwbina took advantage in the last minute of the half, running off the back of a scrum and scoring in the corner.

With some fresh legs on in the second half Rhiwbina carried on where they finished the first with some good attacking play and some neat chips over the top. This tactic led to a couple of clear breaks and tries, neither of them being converted, meaning heading into the last 5 minutes Rhiwbina led 15-7.

The Ath didn’t let their heads drop, carried on running with purpose and kept the ball alive, leading to Joel R showing good footwork on the wing enabling him to score in the corner. From the kick off it was well caught by Rhys H who ran from the half way line without a hand out on him to score his second try.

This was a quick turnaround in the score board meaning the Ath ran out 17-15 winners. As next weeks opponents have a game in the Blues cup it means a week off for the team after a couple of tough games.
