Bridgend Athletic 28-0 Rhiwbina

This fixture postponed earlier in the season as a result of inclement weather gave the Ath a seasons double over the visitors. In the programme notes of the original fixture scheduled for 1st. December 2018, it read, Rhiwbina had secured 6 out 7 wins and were promotion contenders with 27 points, two behind neighbours Glamorgan Wanderers but with two games in hand. The Ath had played 9 with only three wins and were 10th in the table with 14 points. Currently the Wanderers are top of the table and crowned champions today after an emphatic 30-10 victory at St. Joseph’s .Athletic after eight consecutive victories are lying in second place  with one game remaining, but both Rhiwbina and Rumney have three games in hand.

Having lost four games in succession Rhiwbina were looking to return to winning ways but the home sides defence was superb in not allowing the Squirrels to register a single point. The Athletic started in a determined mood and after a solid ten minute opening period surged into a 7 point lead with a Ben Cording try converted by Luke Bevan. The lighter home pack were giving the visitors a torrid time in the scrums and this pressure resulted in captain Ben Howe breaking away to send stand - off Bevan under the posts for a try which he duly converted for a 14-0 lead. Further scrum pressure gave the Ath a strike against the head for no.8 Ben Davies to pick up, make good ground before drawing the Rhiwbina outside half Dylan Casella and pass to Dan James on a supporting run for an excellent score .Luke Bevan added the conversion for a 21-0 half time lead.

With a strong wind behind them it looked as though the home side would pile on the points. But , the inability to judge the strength of the wind with their tactical kicks coupled with an extremely high penalty account ,denied them the continuity to build on the score. To their credit Rhiwbina spun the ball at every opportunity but to no avail as the men in green and gold held their defensive line superbly .Patience finally paid off when in the last quarter a fantastic rolling maul from 15 metres out saw replacement prop Matthew Norman cross wide out .Luke Bevan landed an excellent conversion in difficult wind conditions to secure a 28-0 victory.  The Athletic coaching

team were well pleased with the result, it being the first game this season that the visitors had failed to register a score. The man of the match award went to hooker Lee Murphy. Athletics' last game of the season is next Saturday away to St. Josephs , Cardiff kick off 2.30pm.

The club are grateful to the Old Boys Association for sponsoring today’s game.
