Bridgend Athletic RFC Presentation Evening – June 1st 2024

BARFC held its 52ndt Presentation Evening attended by 90 persons at its Ewenny Road

Clubhouse.

Main Award of Evening Jeff Jenkins Memorial1st Team player of year was won by Kalafi Molitika.

Peter Woods Club Person of Year Award went to committee and maintenance worker David Tidy, whose time, effort, and expertise save the club £1000’s annually.

1sts Awards

Captain – Ben Howe, Nathaniel Cars Players Player of Year – Ben Howe, Terry Coles Memorial Runners Up Award – McKenzie Grey, Daryl Dyke Memorial Award – John Apsee.

Generals (2nd XV Awards)

Captain – Aled Pilliner, David Perry Player of Year Award – Owen Thomas, Nathaniel Cars Players Player of Year – Owen Thomas, Brian Lewis Memorial Runners Up Award – Charlie Ashpole.

Youth Team Awards

Captain – Iolo John, David Davison Player of Year – Jack Lewis, Nathaniel Cars Players Player of Year – Harvey Tooze, Phil Rees Runners Up Award – James Waite, Daryl Dyke Youth Memorial Award – Joint Winners Iolo John, Iwan Sadd, Gareth Edwards Youth Clubman – Sam Breeze.

Other Awards

Life Membership Certificates to Club Directors David Perry & Stuart Morris for their longevity in playing with distinction for the club and off field efforts in supporting club financially through sponsorship and running the 100 club.

Club Caps > 200 Appearances – Dan Apsee, Ben Howe

Bouquet – Club Stewardess Yvonne Blackburn

Retirement Plaques – Coaches John Apsee, David Williams Gerald Williams, Team Manager Paul Hearne & 1st XV 7 times captain Ben Howe. Retirement tankards Youth Coaches and Tean Manager Phil John and Nic Sadd.

Ben spoke thanking all persons at BARFC who have played alongside or helped the teams and club in the background.

Welsh Schools – Iolo John, Welsh Academicals – Iolo John – presented with Welsh Schools shirt and Academicals tie, McKenzie Grey Welsh Academicals, Welsh Police – Tom Jenkins, Liam Phillips, Wesh Fire Service – Ben Cording, Matthew Greenman, Matthew Norman, Glamorgan County – Lochie Barron, Wayne Fooks, McKenzie Grey.

Paul Coles was presented with a BARFC jersey for his long support of BARFC.

Bridgend Town Council Mayor – Ian Williams, Gareth Edwards, Ben Howe, Phil Rees, Liam Griffiths, Nathan Holman, Sheena Lewis & Rachel Carter, Paul & Robert Coles, James Perry, David Perry, Josh Llewellyn, Harry Griffiths, Phil Rees.

Club Chairman Phil Rees hosted event at short notice after illness prevented Gareth Davies from taking part – get well soon Gareth, also David Davison, David Thomas & John Williams are in club’s thoughts.

Evening started with customary Minutes Silence for BARFC Members passed away last year – Joffre Hodges.

Phil thanked Yvonne for organising catering along with her staff,Event Organisers, Adrian Burt, Gareth Davies, himself & Rhys Jones,  Players, Coaches, Physios, Match day helpers, Club Committees and Sub Committees, All Club Sponsors incl Club President Wayne Griffiths of Nathaniel Car Sales and others such as our longest sponsors J.H Apsee & Sons,  Gareth Edwards, David Perry, Josh Llewellyn, Richard Dyke, Ward Jones, Lynn Morgan, Harry Griffiths who help keep the club afloat. Harry Griffiths, Gareth Edwards, Josh Llewellyn & David Perry were there on the night.

There were 1st, Generals and Youth Team Reviews.

Phil then highlighted way forward for club including Generals now admitted to the Admiral National Leagues Div 6 East Central and positive preseason attitude to get fit with regular sessions at the Sand Dunes & Local Beaches.

The club are looking forward to managing the A48 pitch and looks likely will be granted a lease by September 2024 to carry out major improvements to drainage, pitch barriers, hard standing around ground and approach from car park, portable training lights and on-site storage containers.

Bridgend Town Council Mayor Ian Williams then spoke praising BARFC for its role in the Community providing rugby for players of all ages and diversity, and all honours incl 3 British Lions Caps and a Welsh Woman’s Cap the club should be proud of.

The event as usual is captured by the high class accompanying oics from club photographer John Canon.
