BARFC History 2010-2015

Part 1 – Overview, Player Profiles, Club & Match Officials

Club Overview 2010 – 2015.

Following successive good season results finishing 4th, 3rd & 6th in Division 1 West the club were invited season 2012-2013 to join a new intermediate Championship Division to improve standards between Premier League Teams and Division 1 sides.

Sides competing in this new Championship in the 4 years the Ath were part of it included current Premiership sides Merthyr, RGC 1404, Swansea & Ebbw Vale, while teams currently in the Championship included Pontypool, Bargoed, Cardiff Metropolitan, Narbeth, Glamorgan Wanderers, Beddau & Tata Steel – many with clubs Annual Playing Budgets more than £100K.

Led by Captain Sean Williams and Director of Rugby Paul Yardley and coaches John Apsee, David Williams & Stuart Morris from 2012-2013 and Paul Hearne Team Manager & Fixture Secretary the Amateur Ath side punched well above its weight finishing 8th twice and 6th in a 14-team division between 2012-2015. All detailed results and squad players in Players, Results & Achievements Section Part 2.

Some highlights in this period included in Div 1 West season 2010-2011 a 32-30 win against Bridgend Ravens, a league double over Maesteg 27-16 & 31-19 and in the Swalec Cup a narrow 8-17 defeat against Pontypridd. In the Championship the Ath defeated all the fore mentioned teams at least once except for Swansea.

The WRU in season 2010-2011 also set up an elite National League for 2nd XV’s of Teams in Div 1 or the Premier League. The league ran till season 2013-2014. The Ath 2nd XV captained by Tom Cole and with coach Tony Griffiths finished 4th in its inaugural season. The following season led by Nathan Holman with Liam Griffiths joining his father Tony as Team Manager won the league – entitling them to be called the best 2nd XV in Wales.

In seasons 2013-2015 led by captain Harry Griffiths with Tony and Liam managing the side the 2nds reached the District League play off finals. Both seasons despite beating Heol Y Cyw twice each season they lost to them in the play off finals 23-34 & 15-23.

Evan Yardley won a Wales U18 Cap from the Youth side 2010-2011. In season 2012-2013 captained jointly by Lewis Down & Lloyd Wilson under Head Coach Ian Greenman they shared the District Cup drawing 12-12 with Kenfig Hill and the same season won the Pencoed Easter Tournament.

In season’s 2014-2015 under captains Rory Thomas and Matthew Bennett and Head Coach Tony Bennett the Youth team reached the Quarter Final of the Welsh Cup & S.F. of the District Cup each season.

The Mini & Juniors also went from strength to strength. Their Committee and Coaching set ups can be seen in Club Officials section.

In season 2010-2011 the U16, U15, U14, U12 Junior sides won the OSPREYS Cup, with the U13 WINNING THE Ospreys Plate Competition. Stuart Floyd-Ellis and Jak Robins won West Wales U11 A Caps. It is intended in the future to run a whole M&J 30-year history from its inception in 1989.

At the Presentation Evening 2011 the Ath awarded their first Caps for playing achievements to personnel still active. Those recipients were Stuart Morris, John Doherty, Simon Mustoe & Wayne Fooks. The following season Liam & Tony Griffiths, David Williams, Lee Grabham & Ian Holman received Caps. Since then, Grufydd Davies, Sean Williams, Jonathan Stoker & Adrian Kelly have been added. Rhys Webb & Lee Byrne have also received Ath Caps for their outstanding achievements in gaining British Lions Caps and their service to BARFC.

On the financial side of the club under the stewardship of Treasurer Terry Coles and with the generosity of the benefactor he had brought on board generously waiving some of the loan, the club were now mortgage free and debt free by the end of 2015. The seeds had also been sewn for the club to become a Limited Company, which was to fully happen 2018-2019 with Directors appointed.

The improved finances also helped the club have a major revamp with designs managed by local shop Interiors, including new floors upstairs and downstairs and a modern layout with new furnishings.

Our current President & Major Club Sponsor Mr Wayne Griffiths came on board in 2010 and was made President in 2011. He introduced that year a Nathaniel Car Player of Month and Player of Year Award associated with his Company Nathaniel Car Sales.

Player Profiles – 2010-2015

Matt Muir – Prop

Apps 159 1st XV Apps 154 Tries 5 Pts 25

Matthew joined the club seven seasons ago from Beddau when the club were in the Championship and along with fellow props Wayne and Matthew Norman have formed a trio that can punch above their weight in scrums.

He has also developed into a useful ball carrier and strong defensive forward.

His commitment to the Athletic has seen him over those seven seasons commute an estimated 13,00 miles for training and match days. This was recognised with him being awarded the Daryl Dyke Memorial Award at last season’s POY Presentation Evening.

Just before the pandemic his work took him to Plymouth – we will have to see if he can continue his rugby with the Athletic.

Harry Griffiths Wing / Flanker

Apps 107 1st XV Apps 27 Tries 34 Pts 170

Made his 2nd XV debut season 2011-2012 in the back row and after two impressive seasons made the 1St XV in the Championship in season 2013-2014.

His speed and strength saw him converted to a strong running wing, with a goo try ratio of 34 tries in 107 Appearances.

Harry captained the 2nd XV 2 seasons 2014-2016.

His job first with the Ospreys and now the Blues makes any appearances extremely limited these days.

Nick Jones – Scrum Half

Apps 105 1ST XV Apps 7 Tries 21 Pts 128

Nick Jones made his senior debut season 2010-2011 and has crossed for 21 tries and scored 128 points.

Nick first featured for the Ath in the Mini & Juniors. Following a misspent Youth – no rugby! – Nick spent a season at Ogmore Vale RFC.

Most of his senior appearances in recent years have come at scrum half in a half back partnership with brother Scott, though he has also made appearances at centre outside Scott when required. During his first 3 seasons of senior rugby the Ath 2nds competed in the National 2nd XV League for clubs with 1ST XV’s in the top tiers of Welsh rugby.

Nick also known as “The Greek” first captained the 2nd XV in season 2016-2017 when the team defeated Bridgend Sports 2nd XV 18-16 to lift the “Barrie Morris Memorial” Mid Glamorgan District Cup.

He continued as 2nd XV captain the following season 2017-2018 when the 2nd XV entered the inaugural WRU Conference League for 2nd XV teams. The team defeated Rhiwbina 2nd XV 22-7 in the final game of the season to finish top of Tier 2 of that league.

Lee Murphy – Hooker

Apps 100 1ST XV Apps 84 Tries 10 Pts 50

Present incumbent along with Nathan Holman. As Nathan also part of 2008-2009 Youth Welsh Cup and League Double side. He played for the BCOW U16’s

In the last Ath game before lockdown against Maesteg Celtic in the Semi Final of the District Cup hooker Lee Murphy became the latest Ath player to make 100 Ath Senior Appearances. He has been a regular 1St XV player since returning to the club in season 2015-2016 after making 12 2nd XV appearances in 2011-2012 and leaving to join Maesteg from Youth.

Last season he was voted joint Player of Year along with Ben Howe.,

Lee is certainly a player who plays a very physical game and is recognised as a major ball carrier in attack and strong in defence. He is now tuning his aggression with experience and putting his “mad dog” days and serial collector of red and yellow cards behind him

Lee has also showed his versatility by on occasions successfully turning out at blind side flanker.

Dan Howells – Full Back / Wing

Apps 93 1st XV Apps 93 Tries 24 Pts 166

Dan Howells made his 1ST XV debut season 2013-2014 in the Championship. He is a very accomplished and speedy player who is equally effective on the wing as at full back. Dan has a good try scoring record with 24 in his 93 Athletic appearances.

In recent seasons has dual registered with both the Ravens and Swansea. Last season returned to his hometown club Bryncethin from where he originally joined the Athletic, but it would be good news if he would return to the Green & Gold of the Athletic.

Chris Price – Centre

Apps 82 1st XV Apps 54 Tries 8 Pts 40

Chris played 5 games for the 1ST XV in 2012-2013, when he received a BCOW Wales U18 Cap. He is a brave centre who will try and run through centres much larger than him and a strong tackler.

Could have made a lot more appearances than his 82 to date but a succession of injuries and drifting in and out of rugby has not seen him realise his full potential.

Lewis Dando

Apps 62 1ST XV Apps 2

Son of former Bridgend player Steve an Ath player in 70’s.

Lewis is one of the best trainers in the club and well respected by the senior coaches. Was awarded the Daryl Dyke Memorial Award for his commitment at the May 2016 POY Event. Came on as a 1St XV replacement in the last 1st XV game before pandemic against Maesteg Celtic in the Distict Cup Semi Final win.

He is a strong scrummager and good ball carrier.

Scott Govan – Outside Half

Apps 61 1st XV Apps 35 Tries 4 Pts 115

Played Ath senior rugby seasons 2012-2013-2016-2017 before leaving to play at Heol Y Cyw. Most successful season in 1St XV was 2015-2016.

A steady player who kept the line moving and good tactical kicker. Also, a goal kicker.

Scott Jones – Outside Half

Apps 2nds 58 Tries 11 Pts 267

Scott an outside half was recruited from the round ball to oval in 2014-2015.

He captained the 2nds in the Welsh Conference jointly with Aaron Mordecai in 2018-2019 and alone last season.

He has taken over the goal kicking duties of the 2ND XV and has crossed for 11 tries and has scored 267 Ath points.

Scott won 2nd XV Best back award season 2016-2017 and bettered it the following season by winning 2Nd XV POY.

Lewis Down – Hooker / Flanker

Apps 56 1st XV Apps 9 Tries 5 Pts 25

Made 9 1ST XV appearances at hooker seasons 2014-2016.

Captained 2012-2013 Youth side who shared District Cup with Kenfig Hill drawing 12-12 in the final.

A mobile hooker who also plays in the back row – especially since a shoulder injury has limited his appearances of late. Crossed for 5 tries. Assists 2nds and on occasions 1ST XV as a First Aider and assists match day preparations.

Joined committee and made Chairman following the passing of Andrew Tellem. Also, since club became a limited company one of 3 Directors along with Terry Coles and Roy Huntley. Lewis edits Club’s Official Facebook page.

Liam Phillips – Wing / Full Back

Apps 50 1st XV 15 Tries 7 Pts 53

Liam is mainly a full back and made his senior debut season 2014-2015.

He made 15 1ST XV appearances as a wing during seasons 2016-2018, before an injury ruled him out for around a season.

He has a good footballing brain and is quick crossing for 7 tries in his 50 senior appearances. He has also contributed 18 points with the boot when asked to goal kick.

Last truncated season joint second most appearances with 12 and crossed for 2 tries.

His father Mark is a former Youth Team Manager as well as Ath committeeman who was also involved at M&J level.

William Williams – Wing

Apps 45 1ST XV Apps 9 Tries 19 Pts 99

A quick and well-built wing with a good turn of speed and sidestep, with an excellent 19 tries in his 45 Ath Appearances.

Geraint Lang – Flanker

Apps 44 Ist XV Apps 1 Tries 6 Pts 30

First appearance season 2014-2015 from Youth. Won 2ND XV POY season 2015-2016.

A particularly good flanker both in defence and attack, with 6 tries to his credit.

Was not out of place in his appearance in the 1ST XV who have an extremely good established back row difficult to dislodge in recent seasons.

Darren Deguera – Lock / Flanker

Apps 43 1ST XV Apps 43 Tries 2 Pts 10

A Maltese International playing alongside Dan & Rhodri Apsee, who encouraged him to join the Ath playing two of their Championship years 2013-2015.

Darren was a great asset tall and mobile, which enabled him to play lock or flanker. Extremely competitive and a good ball carrier as well as tight play and a useful line out forward.

Jakob Williams – Scrum Half

Apps 43 1st XV Apps 43 Tries 6 Pts 30

Jakob played a few seasons with the Athletic while the team were in the Championship, after coming through the Ath Youth & M&J teams.

A tall and strong and very combative scrum half Jakob is quite a handful for any opposition.

He is currently with Championship side Maesteg Quins but did play some games for the Athletic in Div 1 East Central on permit during season 2018-2019. Unfortunately, a serious leg injury playing Sevens after the completion of season 2018-2019 saw him miss the 2019-2020 truncated season.

Sean Derrick – No 8

42 Apps 38 1ST XV Apps 14 Tries 70 Pts

A free scoring player in youth who captained the team and won Player and Players Player of the year. Powerful player with an extremely useful senior as well as youth try scoring ability.

Josh Seldon

40 2nd XV Apps 9 Tries 45 Pts

First appearance season 2014-2015 from Youth, where he was a Youth Club Person of Year. Good in attack and defence and his versatility has seen him play well in several positions for the 2ND XV.

Ryan Pickford – Wing

38 2nd XV Apps Tries 7 Pts 43

An elusive side stepping and speedy wing joint second highest 2ND XV Apps last season with 12 and 2 tries.

Overall a good try scoring record with 7 in 38 2nd XV Appearances and gaining confidence to become an important member of the team.

Son of Mandy Pickford a former M&J Secretary who was Club Person of Year for her M&J work.

Michael Powell – Wing

Apps 36 1st XV APPS23 Tries 12 Pts 60

Made 1ST XV debut season 2011-2012 and has a good try scoring average of 12 tries in 36 Appearances. Extremely quick off the mark and an elusive and speedy player.

Has mainly played alternating on dual registration between Aberavon and the Ravens in last few seasons, before moving away and joining the Steelmen at Ebbw Vale this season.

Aaron Mordecai – Back Row

Apps 35 1ST XV Apps2 Tries 3 Pts 15

A good leader both on and off the field since his debut in season 2014-2015. Captained side in Conference League season 2018-2019.

A good line out forward and particularly good in loose and tight. His employment working away has limited his appearances. Could be a first team contender if circumstances were different.

Lloyd Evans – Flanker

Apps 34 1st XV Apps 31 Tries 6 Pts 30

Made his senior debut at openside wing forward season 2010-2011 and made a big impression to win a regional Ospreys contract in 2013. He was POY in his first season.

Lloyd went on to become for 5 seasons part of the Wales 7’s World Circuit, before in 1919 moving to Premiership club Ebbw Vale, before joining Aberavon last season.

Stuart Griffiths – Wing / Full Back

Apps 34 1st XV Apps 34 Tries 3 Pts 15

Only played just over 1 season in Championship but played all 28 games in first season crossing for 3 tries.

Gareth Davies – Centre

A good centre in defence and attack with a good try scoring record of 8 in 33 Apps.

Ryan Owen – Centre

Josh White – Full Back

Apps 31 1ST XV Apps 31 130 Pts

An accomplished full back – good under the high ball and setting up counter attacks – played 2 seasons in Championship.

Rejoined his hometown club Porthcawl and kicked a last-minute penalty to win the Welsh Bowl competition on the Millenium Stadium.

Sam Treharne – Flanker

Apps 29 1st XV Apps 20 Tries 5 Pts 25

A good flanker strong in tight and defence work who joined Tata Steel from Ath before returning and making an impact. However, now back with Tata Steel.

Ben Thomas – Flanker

Apps 27 1st XV Apps 25 Tries 1 Pts 5

A strong powerful flanker just making his mark with the Ath when a serious injury playing for the District curtailed what looked a promising rugby career.

Gethin Cattle – Prop

25 2nd XV Apps 1 try 5 points

Gethin Cattle a prop forward made his 2nds debut is season 2014-2015 and last 2018-2019.

A reliable player, good scrummager and also good in the loose.

Jonathon Phillips – Outside Half

Apps 20 1st XV Apps 20 Tries 13 Pts 99

Played most of age group and youth rugby as an outside half whose first instinct was to run the ball rather than kick. His 13 tries in 20 games is a remarkably high 65% try scoring rate per game.

When he did kick his footballing, talents helped both his goal kicking and length he could kick the ball out of hand.

Jonathan sprang to prominence in his first year out of youth playing full back at home to Neath in a Swalec Cup tie. His performance not only earned him MOM, but led to Premier Clubs including Neath, Bridgend Ravens, and Aberavon vying for his signature

Has spent his last few seasons at full back moving between Bridgend and his present club Aberavon, remaining on dual registration with the Athletic and playing permit games at both full back and outside half.

Chris Walker – Wing

Apps 20 1st XV Apps 12 Tries 16 Pts 80

Chris is a well-built very quick and powerful win who has a tremendous try scoring record 16 tries in 20 Appearances. Could have made one of 1ST XV slots his own if he had shown motivation to train and establish himself. Now with Bridgend Sports.

Rory Thomas – No 8 / Centre

Apps 19 1ST XV Apps 9 Tries 2 Pts 10

Originally played 4 1ST XV games in 2016-2017 as a No 8. Immensely powerful player who had the ability to nail down a 1ST XV slot. Captained Youth season 2013-2014.

Played intermittently for 2ND XV over last 3 seasons mainly using his bulk as an impact centre. Crossed for 2 tries in his 10 2Nd XV games.

Iestyn Merriman - Hooker

Apps 14 1st XV Apps 9 Tries 5 Pts 27

After playing Championship games in season 2013 -2014 Iestyn joined Bridgend Ravens and his appearances for the Athletic have been sporadic on permit.

A very mobile hooker Iestyn is also adept at playing at flanker coming off the bench in February against Nantyfyllon in that role for the Ath. A neck injury curtailed his season at the Ravens and Iestyn was training with the Ath as a backrow forward when lockdown ended the season.

We will have to see how Iestyn’s future rugby aspirations pan out when rugby resumes.

Robert Evans – Outside Half

Apps 13 1ST XV Apps 13 Tries 1 Pts 47

Robert is the son of former Wales outside half Gwyn Evans and his first instinct is to use his elusive sidestep to run the ball from all areas of the field.

First played for the Ath in the Championship before leaving rugby to build a house. Then joined Glamorgan Wanderers and has over last two seasons in Div 1 East Central and Div 1 West Central played permit games for the Ath.

1st XV 2010-2011

3rd Div 1 West

Defeated Bridgend Ravens in League 32-30

Doubled Maesteg in League 27-6 & 31-19.

Narrow Swalec Cup loss 8-17 to Pontypridd

Captain Sean Williams, Director of Rugby Paul Yardley. Coaches John Apsee, David Williams.Fitness & Conditioning Coach Rob Green. Team Manager & Fix Sec Paul Hearne.

The team led for the first time by Back Row Forward Sean Williams finished a very respectable 3rd in Div 1 West. 4 of their 5 losses occurred between September & November. They only lost 1 further league game to Bonymaen on 2nd April – avenging that defeat on 27TH April.

Highlights of season was a league double over Maesteg and a home 32-30 league win against Bridgend Ravens. They also pushed mighty Pontypridd all the way in the Swalec Cup with the 8-17 defeat in doubt until the closing minutes.

Their 3rd position also helped them to join an inaugural Championship in season 2012-2013 to bridge between the Premier League & Divisions 1 of the National League.

After finishing 4TH, 3rd in last 2 seasons a 6th place finish for Matthew Hillman’s side was disappointing in an extremely competitive league.

However, the WRU were setting up an Inaugural Championship in season 2012-2013 to bridge big change in standards between Premiership & Div 1 teams, and to try and improve standard at higher end of National Leagues. The Athletics’ results over the 3 seasons 2009-2012 were good enough for the Ath to go into the Championship 2012-2013.
