Bridgend Athletic Youth 31- Llandaff North Youth 17

Friendly – Sat Nov 9th, 2019

Div C East Osprey Youth Bridgend Athletic entertained Blues Conference Llandaff North in a friendly. Both sides have won all their respective league fixtures and in a very competitive game the Athletic ran out 31-17 outscoring their visitors by 5 tries to 3.This completed a senior and youth treble over the weekend.

The Ath started very strongly piling on the pressure however failed to capitalise, making numerous errors in attacking situations, probably due to a lack of rugby in the preceding 4 weeks.

A missed tackle in the opposition 22 saw Llandaff North break clear and score a great length of the field try to open the scoring.

A short while later, another missed tackle again saw Llandaff score a second try to go 12-0 up completely against the run of play.

This then spurred the Ath on with centre Tom Reed regularly smashing holes through the midfield. One such break saw him drive through before feeding fellow centre Danny Osarigie who flew over under the posts for a well worked try converted by outside half Rhys Williams.

From the restart the Ath again attacked and were awarded a penalty on the Llandaff 10 metre line. A quick tap from captain Jack Obbard saw him feed 2nd row Morgan Thomas who sprinted away before throwing a long pass to wing George Tellem to crash over in the corner for a brilliant score. Rhys Williams narrowly missing the conversion. This levelled the scores at 12-12 at half time.

10 Athletic changes were made at half time in order to give all players game time and the Ath then started to dominate all facets of the game.

A quick lineout in Llandaff 22 saw the ball spilled backwards. However, flanker Fynn Mordecai scooped up the loose ball and drove through for a great score which was converted by Williams.

However, Llandaff again hit back to crash over in the corner for a good score which remained unconverted to reduce their deficit to 19-17.

This again spurred the Ath on with forwards now dominating and Tom Reed regularly continuing to smash holes through the midfield.

Another driving lineout on the opposition 22 saw the Ath maul hurtling to the try line only for Llandaff to try to bring it down illegally and then enter the maul from the Ath side- the referee correctly awarding a penalty try.

From the restart centre Tom Reed again punched through the midfield deep inside his own half before again feeding fellow centre Danny Osarigie who sprinted fully 60 metres to outstrip the Llandaff defence and score wide out, to make the final score 31-17.

It was a very good workout for two teams in contention to win their respective leagues. The Ath will look to cut out the mistakes and missed tackles as they move forward over the coming weeks.

This coming Saturday November 16th they have another friendly an away game at Dunvant.
