Iolo John – Plays for Welsh Schools XV
The centenary of the Welsh Secondary Schools was marked at Cardiff Arms Park on Sunday (26 May) when a Welsh XV played a Yorkshire Schools XV.
The first representative game played at the senior age group was against France in Paris on 10 April 1924. Two weeks later the Welsh side hosted Yorkshire in Cardiff.
Congratulations to Ath Youth hooker and captain Iolo John on playing for Welsh Schools XV in this prestigious fixture.
He has also played for Welsh Academicals this and last season.
Yorkshire Schools – a well drilled, strong team scored 2 tries in the opening 10 minutes.
However, the Welsh Schools fought back and with Iolo often acting as link between forwards and backs responded strongly. Iolo was involved in the build up to two of the Welsh tries as they went into half time trailing by 21-20.
Unfortunately, an injury soon into the second half saw Iolo leave the field.
Yorkshire Schools used their power and physical dominance to run out convincing winners.
