Bridgend Athletic RFC Mini & Junior Round Up – Sunday Oct 6th, 2019

Bridgend Athletic RFC Mini & Junior Round Up – Sunday Oct 6th, 2019

U7. After the bad weather a sunny Sunday awaited the Ath Under 7’s. and they did not disappoint, displaying their continually improving skills and the progression they are making is second to none.

Due to an ever-increasing squad the Ath had to arrange two games this week splitting the squad into Yellow and Greens teams.

The Greens enjoyed a first away trip for the team up the Llynfi valley against a spirited Maesteg Celtic. The Athletic players put on a display of the importance of getting the ball to space, this leading to the open brand of rugby that the Ath are known for.

The yellows locked horns with neighbours Bridgend Sports in a highly competitive match that saw an excellent defensive display to complement their free flowing attacking play.

U8. Bridgend Athletic U8s split their squad into two with the Ath Greens playing at Maesteg Celtic & the Ath Golds playing at Bridgend Sports. In true tag spirit no scores were kept. Both Ath teams enjoyed playing with ball in hand but a much bigger effort is required in defence. Next up for the U8s is a short trip to Porthcawl.

U9. Bridgend Athletic U9’s played away at Maesteg Celtic on Sunday 6th October.

The home team’s inability to field more than one team meant that the Ath’, with their strong squad numbers, had to replace a full team every 5 minutes. The wholesale team changes resulted in the Ath’ struggling to build any continuity.

The match was keenly contested, however on too many occasions the Celtic, with their couple of flyers, were able to take advantage of the spaces out wide created by the Ath’ defence forming too narrow.

The game ended with the Ath’ losing by 11 tries to 7.

U10. Bridgend Athletic U10s split in to two teams with the Ath Greens heading to Maesteg Celtic for a round robin with Tondu and the Ath Golds hosting Pyle.

The Ath Golds were outscored 8 tries to 6 in a high scoring 30-40 defeat by Pyle, with brothers Dylan & Rhys Gardiner putting in a mighty defensive shift. Ath try scorers were Dylan Hopkins 2, Zack Hughes, Max Edwards, Jay Florence & Ewan Gill.

The Ath Greens had a frustrating first game drawing 15-15 with Maesteg. Ath try scorers were Dylan Jones 2 & Ethan Davies. The players then seemed to take their frustrations out on Tondu putting in a great display outscoring their rivals by 10 tries to 0, in a 50-0 victory.

Try scorers were Ethan Davies 2, Charlie Howells 2, Mason Brown, Rory Whyte, Osian Kenny, Grayson Lewis Whelan, Regan Henly & Rudi Quinn.

U11. The Ath U11’s travelled to Pontypridd this week with excellent squad numbers again.

The Ath were dominant throughout the game with some fabulous rugby on show from both forwards and backs, leaving Pontypridd struggling for answers.

The Ath ran in 15 tries with Ponty going over the whitewash twice.

Ath try scorers: Evan (4), Oliver Williams (3), Jackson (2), Theo (2) and single tries for Thomas, Rhys, Jamie and Charlie John.

U12.The under 12’s welcomed Loughor to Newbridge fields for what they knew would be a tough encounter. The game lived up to expectations and the first half was a tense affair with the Ath going in at half time 7-5 up.

The second half was just as tough but Loughor’s poor discipline allowed the Ath to control most of the game and the contact area. The boys managed to hold out to win 14 - 12.

U15. Bridgend Ath U15s made their debut In the Ospreys cup against Trebanos looking to avenge a defeat on the last occasion the sides met.

Hopes took a blow however as Trebanos scored the first try. The Ath struck back immediately with both wings scoring before Trebanos scored a secondtry. This left the Ath leading 12-10 lead at half time.

The second half saw Trebanos score 3 unanswered tries condemning the Athletic to a comprehensive 27-12 defeat. A lacklustre performance by the Ath against a decent Trebanos side who were just too good on the day
