Bridgend Athletic RFC - Club History 1990-95

The club was now well established and well attended with various events Thursday – Friday and a Ladies Darts team. The Mini & Junior section as mentioned in 1985-90 report was now thriving with ages U8-U16 and players starting in these years who would not only become Youth Internationals but as well as ensuring the club’s future would become Premiership, Regional, Internationals and British Lions. A long way from an advert in the Gazette in 1989. The likes of Treasurer Mal Evans, Secretary Alan Betty, coaches John Maher, Phil Wolsey and administrators Phil Rees, Roy Huntley and Glyn Rees aided by parents of age groups coming on board built the foundations for a thriving and very important section of the club.

In season 1994 –95 the club was repainted inside and out with Pat Watts, Ken Griffiths “Griff old Parish” and Jeff Jenkins to the fore, New carpets and curtains also fitted. Griff was also updating the Captains Boards each season.

A significant development season 1992-93 was the try value increasing from 4 to 5 points.

Another development was the Central Glamorgan (Wistech League) being replaced in season 1994-5 with admission to the National Leagues. The Athletic needed to finish in the top 2 in season 1993-94 by winning at Tonmawr in the final league game of the season to go into Div 5 of the new National Leagues. However, Tonmawr reversed an earlier 18-10 Athletic win and came out on top 16-8 for the Athletic to finish 3rd and go into Div 7B Central of the New National Leagues.

Whereas the glamour fixture of the 1980’s was a Schweppes Cup 4th round tie in Dec 1989 at Cardiff Arms Park, season 1990-91 saw the Athletic drawn away at St Helen’s in a 6th Round Schweppes Cup Tie against a Swansea side starting with 10 current and 12 future International players and bringing on Stuart Davies as a replacement. A Western Mail article attached was headed “Whites made to struggle.” as the Athletic held them to 6-6 at half time before try braces from Richard Webster and Kevin Hopkins took the game away for Swansea to run out 38-6 victors.

In season 1990-91 Paul Jones playing in the Ath Youth team captained by Lee Grabham won U18 Caps for Wales.

It was an open secret that a brown envelope culture had long existed among the top sides in Wales. However, the WRU can be held part accountable for fuelling such a culture when they introduced the National Leagues in 1994-95 sponsored by Swalec who also sponsored the Swalec Cup.. Their Grant systems and International Ticket allocations provided a huge discrepancy to clubs depending on their position in the league set up, with Division 1 clubs receiving initially over £100K per annum and only around £5k in the lowest set up. This culture also brought the WRU problems later and especially when the New International ground was constructed the revenues to clubs dropped off a cliff edge, leaving many clubs living in expectation of these grants in enormous debt.

This fuelled a stampede amongst the clubs to reach the higher divisions and the need to outdo each other to attract players to get there.

By the end of season 1994-95 the Athletics’ always healthy balance had taken a turn for the worse with £5K owed to the Brewery and £2K to the Inland Revenue.

Fortunately, the club who had always had support from local sponsors had set up large sponsorship deals. Gareth Davies brought in Alan and his son Dean Davies of Merthyr Motor Auctions who for 4 years provided the best sponsorship the club has enjoyed. As well as monetary gifts they purchased the current large white results board, sponsored kit, and a player of the month award. Alan became club president from 1994-1997.

Club secretary Roy Huntley also set up a long deal with KPMG and Chairman Terry Coles a long deal with Microcompass.

Annual sponsored Golf days at Maesteg Golf Club organised by Gareth Davies and latterly Patron David Williams also brought in substantial revenue.

Coupled with good bar sales and a tightening of the belt by the end of season 1995-96 the club were back on sound financial footing and looking to upgrade the club. This will be discussed in the next chapter of Ath history.

This brown envelope culture had not gone unnoticed by the Inland Revenue and like most clubs in Wales in late 1995 the Inland Revenue spent 2 years investigating Welsh Clubs.

Another major fund-raising development was the Friends of Bridgend Athletic 100 Club. In 1992 David Burt set up this monthly prize draw with “Friends” of BARFC setting up a monthly direct debit of £2 / month. The proceeds were to be entirely for rugby. Over the years it has supported new playing kit, training kit, club tours, physio equipment for all ages from Minis to Seniors. The past 10 seasons has seen a contribution go to the youngest Mini Age Group as start-up assistance. David ran this great venture for 25 years, before Stuart Morris took over the administration. Many existing members started back in 1972, still paying the same £2 a month. Any new members very welcome to contact Stuart stuart.morris@mosselectricalsw.co.uk.

A sad by product of the National Leagues was most clubs in Wales lost a team as clubs concentrated their resources on the new leagues. 1994-1995 saw the last season the Ath would field a 3RD XV.

Sadly seasons 1992-94 saw the Athletic fail to raise a side, which highlighted the future importance to the club of the emerging conveyor belt of talent from the newly formed M&J section in 1989-90 season. The youth reformed season 1994-95 with Neil Vaughan as captain and Phil Rees coach with matchday assistance from the committee in particular Pat Watts and Roy Huntley.

Player Profiles 1990-1995

Unfortunately, no records for season 1994-95 and 1997-98 and no 2nd XV records between 1995-2003 so many 2nd XV players appearances would have been higher. In 1992 the value of a try increased from 4 points to 5.

John Doherty – Scrum Half

264 Apps, 205 1sts XV, 36 tries and 183 points

Made 1ST XV debut back in 1992 and last complete season in 1ST XV 2006-2007 fifteen seasons later. John who played through seasons 2001-2003 when unfortunately, no stats were recorded would almost certainly now see him in the rare 300 Ath Apps Club.
