BARFC History 2015-2020

We now come to the final chapter of Ath history 1972-2020, with the period 2015-2020. Players and Officials mentioned in this period can become significant in the future history of BARFC.

Significant Club Events in this period was on March 28th, 2018 the club becoming a limited company appointing Treasurer Terry Coles, Secretary Roy Huntley & Chairman Lewis Down as the first Club Directors.

In March 2020, the season was ended by the Covid 19 Pandemic. While shut the club underwent a major refurbishment replacing the upstairs furniture, repairing downstairs furniture, and painting the club inside and out. Following this club stewardess Yvonne Blackburn introduced successful Sunday Lunches at the clubhouse, which since lockdown are available as takeaways.

Our President Wayne Griffiths of Nathaniel Car Sales also introduced a Nathaniel Cars Player of the Month Award season 2019-2020. Recipients were Ben Davies, Ben Howe, Matthew Norman, Luke Bevan & Sean Williams. There was also intended to be a series of Nathaniel Cars Player of Year Awards at the Annual Presentation Night. Hopefully, this can go ahead at our clubhouse once clearance is given by the Welsh Government.

The Club Website run by Adrian Burt in 2017 changed its administrator to the WRU. Mark Davies took over as Webmaster, then handed on to David Perry & Mike Perry.

Mark Davies also set up the Club Facebook account, with Lewis Down now operating it.

Long term club sponsors Gareth L Edwards & Simon Apsee joined Gareth Davies, David Burt & John Apsee Snr as Club Patrons.

A comprehensive account of the club’s 1ST XV, 2nd XV & Youth playing achievements is available in Part 2 of this history, below is an abridged summary. The future of the club the M&J section with over 300 players also mentioned.

1ST XV summary 2015-2020

After 3 seasons punching well above its weight regularly competing with the likes of cash rich clubs like Swansea, RGC, Ebbw Vale, Bargoed, Merthyr, Pontypool, Newbridge, Narbeth, Tata Steel the Athletic in 2015-2016 were relegated to Div 1 West Central for season 2016-2017 and regularly finished 3rd in subsequent seasons rotating between Div 1 West Central & Div 1 East Central. When the pandemic struck, they were again in 3rd place in Div 1 West Central with a chance of regaining Championship status. The team had also reached the final of the new Mid Glamorgan District Cup. Ben Howe succeeded Sean Williams as Club Captain in 2016-2017 season and remains at the helm after 4 successful seasons, with coaching and management personnel John Apsee, Stuart Morris, David Williams & Paul Hearne in place throughout with Gerald Williams adding his expertise the last 3 seasons.

2nd XV (BARFC Generals) summary 2015-2020

The 2ND XV started 2015-2016 in the Mid District league and finished as District Cup losing finalists.

2016-2017 saw them win the District Barrie Morris Memorial Plate defeating Bridgend Sports 18-16 in the final.

In 2017-2018 they  joined the WRU Conference for elite club 2nd XV’s with 1ST XV’s at least in Div 1 of the Swalec Leagues. That season they finished as Tier 2 Champions. In 2019-2020 they rebranded as BARFC Generals as a tribute to Andrew “General” Tellem competing in the WRU Conference Central. Captains during this period were Harry Griffiths, Nick Jones, Aaron Mordecai & Scott Jones. Liam Griffiths was also a Player Team Manager throughout, while Andrew Tellem and Lewis Down acted as match day assistants and Lewis also player and physio.

Youth XV summary 2015-2020

The Youth XV led by head coach Lee Grabham seasons 2015-2018 enjoyed phenomenal success. In 2015-2016 captained by Luke Williams with assistant coaches John Doherty and Stuart Morris and Sec Mark Phillips they won the Mid District Cup defeating Nantyfyllon 11-8.

2016-2017 captained by Tom Seldon with assistant coaches John Doherty & Kevin Gamble and Secretary Keith Hobby in place, having won the Ospreys A league they won the National League play off final defeating Rumney 37-30 to be officially the best Youth side in Wales. They also ran a 2nd Youth side the Rags captained by Joe Grabham who were losing Welsh Bowl Cup finalists at the Millenium Stadium.

2017-2018 again saw the A side captained by Joe Grabham win the Ospreys A League, but finished runners up to Pontypridd in the National League Play Off final. Kevin Gamble again assisted Lee Grabham with Keith Hobby Secretary. The club again fielded a Rags side coached by Paul Obbard & Mike Groom.

2018-2019 was a difficult season with a mostly 1ST season youth side. Head Coach Chris Thomas with Huw Lewis & Paul Yardley kept the side captained by Matthew Hobby and Cameron Lewis competitive in the Ospreys C League.

2019-2020 saw the side captained by Jack Obbard and with the 2018-2019 coaching set up run away with the Ospreys C East league by Xmas. They were promoted to Ospreys B League following Xmas before the season was halted in March.

Mini & Junior Section - 2015-2020

The Mini & Junior Section continued to thrive in 2015-2020 winning many tournaments and Ospreys Cups.

Lee Grabham’s U16 side went on to become Ospreys A League Youth Champions 2016-2018 and Welsh League Champions in 2016-2017 and Runners Up 2017-2018, with Lee their Head Coach.

Another innovation was Vice Chairman Dean Brown forming an infant’s 3-6 group season 2019-2020 assisted by Head Coach Marcus Sainsbury, Grufydd Davies: Owain Jarvis, Matthew Tellem & Lloyd Thomas.

The Organisation and coaching set up 2015-2020 is as below.

Going forward 2020-2021 Dean Brown now Chairman & Fixture Secretary, Mark Watts Vice Chairman & Angela Bennett Treasurer & Child Welfare Officer.

Obituaries 2015-2020

Unfortunately, in this period we have lost four significant persons in the history of BARFC – Clive Easterbrook, Andrew Tellem, Lee Sims & Terry Coles.

Clive Easterbrook an off-field B ARFC founder along with his great friend Jeff Jenkins. He was the first ever Ath coach back in 1972 and club chairman and fixture secretary as well as a supporter right up to his passing. He along with Jeff were life members and the back room clubhouse lounge has been named the Jeff Jenkins & Clive Easterbrook Lounge with framed portraits and a plaque on the wall of the lounge.

Andrew Tellem joined the Ath in the 1990’s from Bridgend Sports. He made 88 appearances – 68 for the 1ST XV crossing for 24 tries. He captained the 2nd XV earning the title the General after one inspiring team talk. Andrew took a great interest in the BARFC Committee and was honoured to be appointed Chairman taking his role very seriously and instigating and personally carrying out many clubhouse repairs. Following his passing the 2ND XV rebranded as BARFC Generals.

Lee Sims played flanker through the M&J section and youth with limited senior appearances. He was capped as one of a quintet of Ath Youth players in the same Wales U18 team. His long-term coach Mark Davies described Lee as a great character full of mischief. Lee was coaching his son in the U7 team when his sudden passing left the club devasted.

Terry Coles was introduced to the club by Ath stalwart and brother-in-law and business partner David Williams early 1980’s. Terry immediately became a dedicated supporter both physically and commercially and joined the committee in 1984. A long-term chairman Terry instigated a rescue package when the club hit financial problems in 2002. He used his trained accountancy and business skills in 2004 to take over as treasurer, promising and fulfilling a promise the club would be viable under his stewardship. He instigated 3 major club upgrades including in 2020 ahead of his passing on Xmas Eve 2020. His son Robert played through all the age groups and youth and made 207 senior appearances all at 1ST XV crossing for an astonishing 127 tries. Terry as well as supporting the club on the field along with his other son Paul was a summer and winter regular on Saturday’s enjoying a pint in the clubhouse. Terry was one of 3 Directors appointed when the club became a full Limited Company on 28th March 2018.

Player Profiles Senior debuts 2015-2020

Megan Webb – Centre

We must mention Megan Webb in the centre category as the only female playing for the Ath M&J age group to go on and play for the Senior Welsh Women’s side and join her cousin Rhys and other Ath Welsh Senior Caps on the Club Internationals wall.

Megan played until the maximum mixed age of U13 winning many POY awards, before joining Cardiff Harlequins and Cardiff Blues. Megan also has U18 Caps and played for the Wales Women’s Sevens side. Her 5 caps to date have come against Spain, Ireland, Scotland, Barbarians & France.

Ben Cording – Lock

Apps 82 1st XV Apps 63 Tries 4 Pts 20

Present incumbent lock. Broke into the 1ST XV from impressive 2Nd XV performances at the tail end of season 2016-2017.

His willingness to learn and dedication has seen him harness his feisty aggression to become an integral part of the 1ST XV squad being trusted with line out calls. He received the accolade of his fellow players by being awarded the Nathaniel Car Sakes Players Player of the Year at the 2019 Presentations Night at the Heronston Hotel.

He carries well and his fitness guarantees that he is never far away from the ball. Hopefully, he has many years to further improve and help the team achieve its ambition of a return to the Championship. He is an example to Athletic youngsters and 2nd XV players that with the right attitude and dedication there is a pathway into a strong 1ST XV Squad.

Tom Jenkins – Centre

Apps 70 1st XV Apps 65 Tries 3 Pts 20

Tom made his first XV senior debut in season 2016-2017 and has since been an ever present normally at inside centre.

He is an exceptionally reliable and consistent performer doing all the basics of the position with good distribution and a sound defence.

Luke Bevan – Outside Half

Apps 55 1st XV Apps 55 Tries 11 Pts 426

Played all through Ath age groups. In youth part of team that won Welsh Youth Cup and following season Welsh Youth leagues. Also capped for Boys Clubs of Wales.

Started 1ST XV career 2016-2017 while in 3rd year youth and regular 1St XV outside half except for 5-month period out with knee injury season 2018-2019.

Took an opportunity last January to play rugby in Australia. At a club ceremony presenting Luke with a photo album memento of his time with the Ath Head Coach John Apsee described Luke as an exceptionally talented player who could succeed at a much higher level in the game, whether in Australia or back in Wales.

Luke had a great first season in Australia playing for Parkes Boars winning POY and other awards and scoring 16 of 21 points as his side won their Area Cup. He has been nominated for Sports Personality of Parkes District.

Ben Davies – No 8

Apps 55 1ST XV Apps 55 Tries 13 Pts 65

Current incumbent at No 8. Part of Ath Youth team that won both the Welsh Youth and Welsh League Cups. Was Players Player of Year with Youth before going straight into the 1ST XV where for the last 3 seasons he has played alongside experienced captain Ben Howe and former captain Sean Williams in as good as any back row seen in both Division 1 East Central & Div 1 West Central.

Ben excels at picking up from the back of scrums and his speed has seen him cross for 13 tries in his 55 games to date. Winner of first new last season Nathaniel Player of Month for September.

Dan James – Scrum Half

Apps 53 1ST XV Apps 51 Tries 21 Pts 105

Dan was part of the recent Youth side under head coach Lee Grabham that won the Welsh National League play offs.

While still in youth scored a try on his 1ST XV debut away at Bargoed. This set the tone for 21 tries in 53 Athletic games. Although small in stature he is very quick and has played several games on the wing for the Athletic.

In recent seasons Dan was dual registered with Bridgend Ravens and last played for the Athletic in January before joining Championship side Glamorgan Wanderers.

Robin Davies – Played All Back Positions

Apps 50 1st XV Apps 49 Tries 9 Pts 129

Robin Davies joined the Athletic from Kidwelly when moving to Bridgend season 2017-2018.

Robin is one of the most versatile backs at the Athletic and has played very competently at 1st XV Level at full back, both half back positions, centre, and wing where he played much of last season. He has crossed for 9 tries in his 50 Appearances.

He is also an accomplished goal kicker when required adding a further 84 points to his 45 from tries.

Hywel Cosby – Wing

Apps 45 1st XV Apps 1 Tries 8 Pts 45

Hywel Cosby made his 2nd XV debut season 2014-2015 as a very mobile hooker, almost playing in the loose like a third flanker. He won 2ND XV Players POY for season 2015-2016.

During pre-2019-2020 season training the senior coaches looked to utilise his speed by converting him to a wing in preseason friendlies. He also made 1 1st XV appearance in his new position.

4TH leading 2nd XV Apps with 11 in recent truncated season and second top try scorer with 3 tries.

Aled Pilliner – Lock

Apps 44 1ST XV Apps 3 Tries 1 Pts 5

Aled Pilliner is a tall and physical player who adds bulk to the scrum, a good line out exponent and good ball carrier well capable of playing at 1ST XV level.

Following an excellent season 2017-18 in which he was top of the 2ND XV appearances with 16 Apps, and won Best 2NDXV Forward Award at POY Evening, Aled was persuaded to preseason train with the 1st XV. He played preseason and 3 games in a physical forward orientated Div 1 East Central League.

Unfortunately, Aled did not persevere and returned to the 2nd XV. He has the physique and if motivated could still compete for a 1ST XV place.

Stuart Floyd-Ellis – Centre

Apps 37 1st XV Apps 36 Tries 11 Pts 119

Part of recent youth side that under coach Lee Grabham won the Welsh Youth League Play Off.

Has a big sidestep and turn of speed that has made him a prolific try scorer at both youth and senior level. Now dual registered with Bridgend Ravens – but always makes himself available whenever not required by the Ravens. Also supports the club off the field.

Sam Richards – Wing / Full Back

Apps 36 1st XV Apps 36 Tries 10 Pts 50

Played as an attacking full back in the Youth side that won the Welsh Youth League Play Off Final.

Has played full back, outside half and now settled on wing in the 1St XV.

The last truncated season was his best when he scored 4 tries in his 8 appearances on the wing and his confidence seemed sky high.

Tom Davies – Centre / Flanker

Apps 32 1st XV Apps 27 Tries 9 Pts 45

Like Stuart Floyd-Ellis a valuable member of the successful Ath youth side under Lee Grabham – though as a flanker.

The Athletic at that time were suffering a dearth of centres so experimented with Tom in that position. He took to the position like a duck to water where his long strides made him quick and able to make line breaks and score important tries. His back-row experience also benefited his sound defence.

Last season went to Plymouth University and was only able to play when home on leave. His father Rod is the current 1ST XV Physio.

Matthew Tellem – Lock

 31 2nd XV Apps 3 Tries 15 Points

Matthew is the son of Andrew former Ath player and Club Chairman Andrew “The General” Tellem. In Andrew’s memory the Athletic 2nds rebranded last season in the Conference as Bridgend Athletic Generals.

Matthew was proud and made a big effort to improve his fitness and do his father’s memory proud.

Matthew has a powerful physique and uses it well as a ball carrier. He is also a coach in the new Ath Infants aged 3-6 development squad. Another Tellem his brother George while in the Youth team also made a few Generals games last season and next season could see both Matthew and George regulars in the Generals.

Tom James – Wing

Apps 29 1st XV Apps 27 Tries 5 Pts 25

Another player from the recent successful Youth team.

Amazingly fast but has been dogged by injuries including a broken jaw at Porth season 2018-2019.and a hamstring injury early last season against Treorchy in the Plate.

Needs an injury free season to boost his confidence and improve on his 5 try tally to date.

Owain Leyshon – Wing / Flanker

Apps 29 1st XV Apps 18 Tries 5 Pts 25

Played in the back row in the recent successful youth team and another convert like Tom Davies and Will Barraclough to help an unusual for the Athletic shortage of quality backs.

Settled well into the wing role during season 2018-2019 in Div 1 East Central. However, a preseason foot injury limited his 2019-2020 to just 2 appearances before the pandemic halted the season.

Jamie Sidford – Wing

28 2nd XV Apps 6 Tries 30 Pts

Jamie is an elusive wing with a good try scoring average of 6 tries in 28 2ND XV Apps.

Alex Borley – Wing

26 2ND XV Apps 2 Tries 10 Pts

Alex has played 26 games in seasons 2018-2020 since coming into the team on the wing, crossing for two tries.

A speedy committed player in attack and defence.

Will Petchell – Lock / Flanker

Apps 26 1st XV Aps 25 Tries 2 Pts 10

Will moved to the Area in 2017 to take up a Veterinary Position and joined the Athletic initially as a flanker.

Will played Age group rugby with Grimsby RFC in Lincolnshire and captained his school team King Edward V1 Grammar School. He went on to captain the University of Nottingham Sutton Bonnington team for two seasons.

Will made a total of 26 Athletic senior appearances (25 for 1st XV) crossing for two tries. His versatility saw him play at lock, flanker or No 8 for the club and he was a determined ball carrier as well as an excellent tackler. His job sometimes on call on a Saturday or working Saturday afternoons curtailed the number of games he could play.

He left following the season being curtailed to take up a new position at Liverpool University.

Lewis Evans – Outside Half

Apps 24 1st XV Apps 24 Tries 6 Pts 160

Lewis joined from Glynneath in final Championship season 2015-2016 playing in all 24 games. Leading points scorer that season with 160 (6T, 17C, 32P).

An accomplished outside half who could also play full back.

Joe Symons – Scrum Half

23 2nd XV Apps 4 Tries 4 Pts 34

A very elusive and quick scrum half playing seasons 2017-2019, but unfortunately left club before last season.

Crossed for 4 tries in his 23 games and added 14 points with the boot.

Morgan Clemett – Prop

Apps 22 1st XV Apps 12 Tries 1 Pts 5

Morgan was Youth Clubman of Year 2015-2016.

He showed promise in a tough Div 1 East Central forward orientated league before suffering an injury setback. Has shared his playing time since between the 1ST & 2nd XV’s and has the potential to claim a 1ST XV spot with the right application.

A mobile forward with good ball handling skills.

Callum Swinford – Prop

Apps 22 1stXV Apps 5 Tries 1 Pts 5

In his first season out of youth Callum Swinford was awarded best 2ND XV forward at last year’s 2018-2019 POY Presentation Evening.

Callum a strong scrummager and good loose forward has made 5 1ST XV appearances and has with right attitude and fitness an opportunity to step up to the 1ST XV.

Josh Evans

20 2nd XV Apps Tries 2 Pts 10

Josh had a particularly good preseason training 2019-2020 with the 1ST XV squad before the birth of his child meant a break from rugby. Played 2nd XV later that season.

A lively hooker who has a lot of potential.

Cameron Thomas – Hooker / Flanker

Apps 20 1st XV Apps 16

Cameron though small in stature was big in heart. He was excellent as a hooker in the phenomenally successful Ath Youth side that won the Welsh League Play Off Final.

He was like an extra flanker around the field where he played most of his 1ST XV games. Unfortunately for Cameron, the Athletic had experienced hookers & flankers limiting his opportunities.

He opted to fill a vacancy with Championship side Maesteg Quins where he is well thought of.

Zac Evans – Prop

Aps 19 1ST XV Apps 18

Zac was a big prop who came from youth. His size made him exceedingly difficult to push against in the scrum. Joined Maesteg and played against the Ath.

Lloyd Griffiths – Lock

Apps 19 1ST XV Apps 13 Tries 1 Pts 5

Lloyd showed great potential from youth, accomplished in both tight and loose and an excellent line out forward.

Unfortunately for the Ath he took that talent to Tata Steel.

Will Barraclough – No 8 / Wing

Apps 17 1st XV Apps 16 Tries 7 Pts 35

A prolific try scorer and contributor at No 8 to the Ath youth side’s Welsh Youth Cup and Welsh Youth league wins in successive seasons.

With a settled senior back row, the Athletic looked to utilise his speed and strength on the wing. A tally of 7 tries in 17 games including a last-minute match winning try at Treorchy in season 2018-2019 proved he can cross the whitewash from the back row or wing. Now at Swansea University and hopefully can still play for the Athletic on a more regular basis.

Matthew Greenman – Prop

Apps 17 1st XV Apps 3 Tries 2 Pts 10

Matthew certainly has the physique to compete for a 1ST XV place and was drafted into the 1ST XV last season when injuries and other circumstances left a dearth of fit props.

Matthew learnt quickly and gave a good account of himself. With a good preseason of fitness, he can join the 1ST XV squad. He is a useful ball carrier and good in the tackle.

Jacob David – Flanker / Wing

Apps 16 1st XV Apps 7 Tries 2 Pts 10

Jacob joined as a flanker from Kenfig Hill season 2017-2018. He was one of the quickest and fittest players at The Athletic.

He found it difficult to break into the back row but was effective as a converted wing scoring tries away at Seven Sisters and in a commendable away win at Ystalyfera.

Returned to Kenfig Hill start of last season 2019-2020.

Joe Patterson – Centre / Wing

Apps 16 1st XV Apps 14

Son of former Ath flanker Andrew and grandson of former Bridgend flanker George.

Joe was like Stuart and Tom part of the successful Ath youth side as a strong and fast centre or wing.

He has played in both positions in the 1ST XV. Last season did harbour thoughts during preseason when he trained hard of reverting to flanker. Moved to Cardiff and disappeared late 2019. Hopefully will return next season.

Chris John – Lock / Flanker

Apps 15 1st XV Apps 15 Tries 2 Pts 10

Chris now the son in law of club sponsor Simon Apsee joined the club in season 2016-2017 after a break from rugby. He was equally effective at lock and 2nd row.

He made a great impression that season with line out prowess and ball carrying and tackling that led to the players awarding him the Players POY Award at the Presentation Evening in June 2017.

Unfortunately for the Athletic the Ravens also noted his progress and Chris became an integral part of their squad.

Last season a neck injury curtailed his playing. Maybe after the enforced break he will one day return to the Athletic – he would certainly be very welcome.

Luke Hollyman - Centre

15 2nd XV Apps 6 Tries 30 Pts

Luke Hollyman is a talented centre who in his 15 games has crossed for 6 tries.

Luke has unfortunately not been regularly available as he has the talent to compete for the 1STXV squad.

Ellis James

15 2ND XV Apps

Ellis is the son of Ath stalwart Jonathan James who played 164 games back in the 1980’s and 90’s.

Ellis with 15 Apps to date has a long way to go to match his father but is a wholehearted player whether at flanker or second row. He is strong defensively and plays as often as he can since qualifying as a Pharmacist.

Grant Edwards

 15 2nd XV Apps Tries1 Pts 5.

Played 15 games during last 2 seasons on the wing crossing for 1 try.

Jacob Lloyd – Outside Half

Apps 15 1st XV Apps 15 Pts 68

Jacob is a product of Pencoed Youth and is on the Ravens books.

He has been assigned to the Athletic for the past two seasons to gain experience at Div 1 level.

Unfortunately, last season he suffered a double fracture of his leg and ankle at the Brewery Field in a Div 1 East Central fixture against Glamorgan Wanderers ruling him out for the rest of that season.

He is a versatile player with a big right foot both for goal kicking and tactical kicking out of hand, who has turned in accomplished performances at centre and full back as well as outside half for the Ath.

Luke Williams - Flanker

Apps 15 1st XV Apps 12.

A former youth team captain season 2015-2016 Luke made a few 1ST XV appearances before drifting from the game. He made a return in season 2018-2019 but again failed to settle, which is a pity as he has potential as a strong ball carrier. Played for Welsh Academicals. The door remains open.

Stuart Robson – Wing

 14 1st XV Apps Tries 1 Pts 5

Joined club in season 2018 and has played 14 games to date mainly on the wing crossing for 1 try.

Ellis Bull – Prop

13 2nd XV Apps

Last truncated season 2019-2020 was Ellis first senior season from Youth.

He made a good impression at prop against some seasoned Welsh Conference campaigners and made the most 2ND XV Apps playing in 13 of the 15 games.

Josh Carey – Outside Half / Centre

13 2ND XV Apps 2 Pts

Josh can play outside half or centre. A skilful player who like many 2nd XV players has played in multiple positions including 2 at lock.

Cameron Lewis – Outside Half / Wing

Apps 12 1st XV Apps 1 Tries 4 Pts 20

A talented outside half or wing in youth winning both the Youth POY and Youth Players POY in his final youth season 2018-2019, when he was joint captain with Matthew Hobby.

Mainly used on the wing at senior level. Made 1 senior appearance on the wing and has the talent to break into the 1ST XV by building up his confidence. Crossed for 4 tries in his 11 2ND XV appearances.

Matthew Watkins – Prop

10 2nd XV Apps

Recruit season 2019-2020. An enthusiastic player who trains hard looking to improve.

His confidence is improving with game time and he carries strongly on occasions. Has a good attitude

Josh Davies – Outside Half

8 1ST XV Apps 11 pts.

Josh the son of Ath stalwart No 8 Lee Davies joined in season 2017-2018 from Bridgend Sports where he was a consistent high scorer in the lower leagues.

Well built he was hard to stop, but after injury chose to return across the bridge.

Levi Hallett- Full Back

Apps 8 1st XV Apps 5 Pts 11

Made his senior appearances while still in youth season 2018-2019, where he was top scorer with 75 points. Also played with Tom Davies for BCOW that season defeating Bristol Academy 24-18.

Was progressing well with the 1ST XV in a difficult Div 1 East League but opted to play last season at a lower level at Heol Y Cyw.

Caine Woolerton – Full Back

Apps 8 1st XV Apps 8 Tries 4 Pts 24

Caine Woolerton like Robin Davies has played every back position in his time with the Ath since playing through all the age groups. He was part of the Ath youth side under mentor Lee Grabham to win theWelsh League Cup Play Off.

Like Joe Grabham he has been awarded an Ospreys Development contract. He was selected for the Wales U20 squad and Sevens squads but did not actually start for those sides. Missed a lot of last season with a bad shoulder injury sustained playing for the Ravens.

Whenever available he has played 8 1ST XV games for the Athletic crossing for 4 tries.

Harry Harries – Flanker

Apps 8 1st XV Apps 1 3 tries 15 Pts

After playing youth rugby with the Ath Harry joined Pencoed. Harry rejoined the club from Pencoed. He showed plenty of early promise and trained well making an impression.

A good line out forward and lively loose player scoring 3 tries in only 8 games, has the ability with right attitude to challenge for a 1ST XV place.

Daniel 0’Sullivan – Centre

Apps 7 1ST XV Apps 7

Very much the new kid on the block. Made his 1ST XV debut as a substitute against Tondu when a 3rd year youth player and impressed to then make the position his own.

A tall well-built strong player who gained a Wales U16 Cap and was part of an Ospreys Development squad – though a serious knee injury ruled out many youth appearances for the Ospreys or Ath.

Hopefully will now stay injury free and add strength to the Ath midfield.

Ben Elsworthy – Lock

6 2ND XV Apps

Ben shows good promise in his 6 appearances to date to nail down a lock position.

Joe Grabham No 8

Apps 5 1st XV Apps 5

Joe in his first year in the Ath Rags youth side captained the team in the Welsh Bowl Final on the Millenium Stadium. The following season he captained the A side coached by his father Lee to the Welsh Youth League Play Off Final..

Along with Caine Woolerton Joe was awarded an Ospreys Development contract, playing in the newly formulated Celtic Cup. He has also played for Bridgend Ravens.

Joe captained a Wales Select U19s team scoring a try in a 33-12 victory against Japan High Schools at Taffs Well.

When available he has played 5 games for the Ath 1ST XV.

Javen Bell – Flanker / Wing

Apps 5 1ST XV Apps 3 Tries 2 Pts 10

Javen Bell has just rejoined club from Tondu having played Youth rugby with the Ath – but a broken jaw in his second game has limited his appearances. Javed is primarily a back row forward but has been used by the 1ST XV on the wing.

A very combative player and useful asset to BARFC.

Geraint Roberts – Full Back

Apps 4 1ST 1st XV Apps 4

Geraint Roberts joined the Athletic in January 2020 and made an immediate impression going straight into the 1St XV against Dunvant. Unfortunately, the season ending early March meant he only managed 4 appearances to date.

Geraint was player coach at Pontrhydyfen but has played at a high level with the Ravens as one of his previous clubs.

He is very sound in defence and always prepared to run the ball and join the attacking line.

For logistics the WRU moved the Ath to the much more physical and forward orientated Div 1 East Central. A pre- season knee injury ruled out last season’s outside half and leading points scorer Luke Bevan until mid-February. On loan from Bridgend Ravens Jacob Lloyd was then ruled out for the rest of season from Sept 22nd with a double leg and ankle break against Glamorgan Wanderers. In all 8 outside halves were used. 48-year-old Coach Stuart Morris helped on 4 occasions including 2 tough starts at Glamorgan Wanderers & Cambrian Welfare, where his contribution belied his age.

The Ath only won 4 of their first 10 games. The coaches shored up the backs by playing last season’s youth backrow of Flanker Tom Davies at centre and No 8 Will Barraclough & Flanker Owain Leyshon on the wings. The move worked. Only Champions Glamorgan Wanderers in 2 close games doubled the Ath.

From Dec to April, they only lost 1 league game winning the last 10 to finish a very respectable 3rd.
