Bridgend Athletic RFC Congratulates Caine Woolerton on Selection for Wales 7’s Squad

Bridgend Athletic would like to congratulate Caine Woolerton on his selection for the Wales 7’s Squad competing in the Elche 7’s tournament in the Valencian Region of Spain this weekend today the 9th and tomorrow 10th November. He is one of four new additions to the squad as part of new Welsh 7’s coach Darren Edward’s first selection. The tournament gives Edward’s the opportunity to look at player’s like Caine ahead of the World Series of 7’s tournaments kicking off in Dubai in a month’s time. Caine has been training with the squad for a month and proved he has fully recovered from last season’s shoulder injury by playing for the Ospreys Development Squad v Dragons.

Wales who won the tournament in 2017 compete in today’s Pool stages against Russia, Spain and China on Saturday. The Spanish side include guest players from Fiji and UK. Progress can be followed on the Elche website. Other tournament teams include Ireland, Scotland, France, Italy, Belgium, Poland and Germany.

Caine commenced playing for the Athletic U8’s and with the guidance of Head Coach Lee Grabham and Assistant Kevin Gamble continued with the Athletic right through the age groups to U16 and then two seasons in the Athletic Youth, before along with his youth team captain Joe Grabham was awarded an Ospreys Academy place last season.

He is a very versatile back and has turned out with distinction in all the back positions. Caine was part of the Athletic junior sides that won the Ospreys cup at both U15 and U16 level. At youth level in his two seasons the Youth won the Ospreys A League. The first season they also won the Welsh Youth League play off final defeating Blues Region side Rumney. Season 2017-2018 they were beaten finalists to Pontypridd in another Welsh Youth final play off. Throughout his career Caine has been a prolific try scorer.

Last season along with Joe Grabham he featured in the inaugural Celtic Cup for the Ospreys Academy. Since the Celtic Cup Caine has featured for the Bridgend Ravens in the Premiership last season. A bad shoulder injury cut short his season.

In all Caine has played 8 Athletic 1ST XV fixtures – 4 during last season, scoring 4 tries and 2 conversions for 24 Ath points.

The club wish Caine well for what look’s like a very bright future. Recent Ath players featuring in Wales 7’S squads include Rhys Webb, Lloyd Evans and Wales leading 7’S try scorer Luke Morgan.
