Glorious weather saw both sides opt for a fast-running game in a friendly, with the home side outscoring the Ath Generals by 4 tries to 3 in a 24-15 win for the Rangers. The Ath gave all 22 players plenty of game time with 3 of current youth side playing hooker Iolo John, No 10 Harvey Tooze and back row forward Jack Lewis making his senior debu
Some exciting running rugby from the Ath back three on the day by James Puaca, Cam Hicks and Rhys Hyde was giving good platform to work from. For the Ath the highlight of the day would have been James Puaca 80 metre run going around numerous Tondu, to be halted a metre short.
The Ath made several incursions into the Tondu 22 several times before finally being rewarded for their efforts. Some Cool heads and more time playing together may have resulted in a few more tries on the day.
The Ath struck first with Rhys Heard’s all action display forcing his way over for his first ever Bridgend Athletic try, following some good carrying from Luke Griffiths snd Stuart Robson.
A lapse in concentration saw Tondu strike back with a unconverted try of their own.
Tondu then took control of the game for the next ten minutes and some sustained pressure saw them cross again for an unconverted to take a 10-5 lead in to half time.
The Ath introduced all 7 replacements at half time to give everyone ample playing time and refresh some tired limbs. In to the second half Nick Jones was kicking the balls to the corner and keeping Tondu pinned in their own half
A rehearsed move from a scrum saw Harvey Tooze hitting a nice line take on couple of defenders before offloading to Rhys Hyde to crash his way over in the corner for an unconverted try, levelling the score at 10-10.
Tondu raced away through the middle of a lineout for a converted try to put them back in front at 17-10.
Danny Osarigie was carrying lots of ball and proving just as effective in defence and turnovers but wasn’t rewarded for this hard work in the loose. A Tondu clearance found its way in to wing Cam Hicks hands, and fancy footwork and strength saw him round all the Tondu cover defence and crash over for another unconverted try. 17-15
Charlie Ashpole, Geraint Lang and Josh Seldon had put in great defensive shift throughout and did a fair share of hard work with the ball in hand.
A late Tondu try saw the home team take the spoils 24-15 in a well contested and open game. This coming Saturday the Generals will be supporting their senior side against promotion winning Tondu at the Brewery Field.
