Bridgend Athletic Mini & Junior Match Reports – Sunday Nov 10th

All teams observed a minute’s silence for Remembrance Sunday ahead of their games. The Mini U7-U11 teams all welcomed local rivals Bridgend Sports across the River Ewenny at Newbridge Fields.

U7.  With it being derby day weekend in the club the Ath 1st team brought home the win and today Bridgend Athletic Under 7’s played Bridgend Sports

With large numbers the teams were split into two. The Under 7’s are showing improvement week after week and you can clearly see that the hard work they put in, in training is paying off. The most important thing is that every player is playing with a smile on their face & clearly love & enjoy their time on the field. Excellent passing & tagging by both teams today. Well done to all.

U8. Bridgend Athletic U8s hosted Bridgend Sports & Valley Ravens at Newbridge Fields on a sunny Sunday 10th Nov.

The Ath fielded two teams the green & golds. Excellent work shown by both Ath teams in defence with multiple six tag turnovers. Same in attack with great evasion and ball handling skills displayed. No scores were kept however it was clear the Athletic outscored their opponents comfortably.

Well done to all 4 teams involved.

U9. Sunday 10th November saw Bridgend Athletic U9’s host Porthcawl and their neighbours and close rivals Bridgend Sports at Newbridge Fields.

The Ath’s numbers allowed for the formation of two teams, the Greens and the Yellows, with each playing 1 match against Porthcawl and 1 against the Sports. The matches were played at a high tempo with all teams displaying a good quality of rugby.

The growing communication and understanding between the Ath’ players is resulting in a full team effort with every single Ath’ player bringing something to the performances.

In total 4 matches were played, with both matches against Porthcawl ending in defeat and both matches against the Sports resulting in victory.

Whereas all the results may not be going the way of the Ath’ at present, the players are making noticeable improvement week-on week. They are taking note of what’s covered in training during the week and applying it come match time on a weekend.

U10. Bridgend Athletic U10s hosted local rivals Bridgend Sports.

With both clubs boasting large squads, it was agreed two games would be played. The Ath fielded two separate teams the green & golds. Dominant performance shown by both Ath teams outscoring Bridgend Sports 18 tries to 3 over two games.

Try scorers were Osian Lord 4, Ethan Davies 3, Dylan Hopkins 2, Jude Lewis 2, Rhys Cawley 2, Zack Hughes 2, Mason Brown, Grayson Lewis Whelan, Rudi Quinn.

Final Scores:  Bridgend Ath Greens 40 vs 5 Bridgend Sports. Bridgend Ath Golds 50 vs 10 Bridgend Sports

U11. Bridgend Athletic under 11s welcomed Bridgend Sports to Newbridge Fields on Remembrance Sunday.

Throughout the U 11s mini rugby journey this fixture has always proved to be well contested and today’s game continued in the same vein. Both teams boasted large squads, with all players contributing towards an entertaining game of rugby. Despite the slippery conditions, there was minimal handling errors and champagne rugby from both teams.

Theo bagged a hatrick of tries, with single touchdowns for Charley, Ollie, Jacob, Oliver and Evan. The Sports scored 4 well worked tries leaving the final score Ath 8 Sports 4.

U14. The U14’s made the short trip down the M4 to play Cwmavon after not playing them for a couple of seasons.

After a few dropouts due to illness the Ath played the whole game with 14 players against the 15 Cwmavon.  The Ath also gave a debut to Ewan Pritchard after a few weeks of training to get up to speed.

The Ath ran out winners 48-17 with the following try scorers Alex T, Rhydian, Harry G, Matthew x 2 and Rhys H x 3. Iolo J with 4 conversions.

U16. Not having a game for the last 3 weeks the u16’S were chomping at the bit to get back on the field. Today we welcomed Loughor in our Round 2 Ospreys Cup game.

The boys were up for this game with banter all week with their regional squad teammates.

The Ath started strongly playing in the right areas and putting big pressure on Loughor in all aspects of play. Will Fyfe going over for the first try. The next points come via a long-distance penalty from Evan Beach. The Ath were in control of play with forwards dominating play and linking with backs for Evan Beach to cut through Loughor's defence to score and convert.

The second half with a change in personnel and losing the 10 resulted in a loss of structure allowing Loughor back in the game. However, some brilliant defence by the Ath resulted in a good if narrow 15-12 victory.
