BARFC History – Years 1985-90

1985-90 was a golden period in the Athletics’ history both on and off the field. Having acquired full membership of the WRU 1986-87 season they joined the Central Glamorgan League Division 3 1987-88 and gaining successive promotions to compete in Div 1 by season 1989-90. 1988-89 saw the club reach the Silver Ball Final. The following season 89-90 the reward for reaching the 4th Round of the Schweppes Cup was a glamour tie against Cardiff at the Arms Park on Dec 16th. This period also saw players create individual try and points scoring records that stand to this day. Another especially important development in 1989-90 was the formation of a Mini & Junior Section of BARFC. All above covered in Rugby section. It also saw the club broaden its touring horizons with links to Japan, Canada, France, and a World Tour in 1988 as discussed below.

Having regularly toured over the Seven Bridge since the club was founded in 1972 the next five years saw the Athletic become World Globe Trotters. In May 86 they toured Canada in 1988 they repaid a visit in 1995 by Superman of Tokyo by including them in an 18-day World Tour also taking in Hawaii and Hong Kong. They also set up a reciprocal Wales – France Rugby International weekend hosting.

1986 Tour of Canada

Following an idea hatched a few years back and a hectic year of fundraising with Phil Rees as Tour organiser and Kevan Tee, Tim Pound and Mike Evans principle fundraisers on May 2ND, 1986 the Athletic jetted off from Gatwick to Toronto. A small squad of 20 captained by Gavin Hall and with no recognised scrum half played four games during their 14-day tour.

First up was Burlington Centaurs RFC who were brilliant hosts, who the Ath narrowly defeated. Highlight was a trip to Niagra Falls. Burlington actually paid a reciprocal visit with the Ath hosting them August 1988. Ottawa Byetown Blues were the next excellent hosts and narrowly defeated the Ath in a physical encounter.

From Ottowa the Ath travelled to St Anne de Bellevue, an upmarket suburb of Montreal where they again had a fantastic welcome off their hosts. Socialising and injuries were now taking their toll and the Ath lost their 3rd game narrowly. While there their hosts took them to the Riviere Rouge for white water rafting which was a brilliant experience, and the group were sad to leave that place.

Finally, the Ath returned on the long journey back to Toronto staying at the quality Roehampton Hotel. Following a narrow defeat on the last night many Canadians they had met on tour particularly from Burlington joined the Ath for a party at the hotel. 960 bottles of Labatts Blue purchased from the local liquor store from their kitty and a splendid buffet provided by the hotel ensured a great time was had by all. One lady made the long journey from Montreal and so impressed Meirion Phillips that he married her and emigrated to Canada.

It is planned that next Saturday Oct 31st this ground-breaking tour will be illustrated with many more pictures and tour details on the Ath Facebook and Website.

Superman RFC Tokyo Association Begins 1985

Superman RFC Tokyo were a side even younger than the Athletic formed in 1975 following Wales defeating Japan 82-6 in Tokyo during their Japan tour Kenichi Okhubo said it would take Superman to beat that team. He was inspired to form the Tokyo side which plays in the red colours of Wales and now in the Tokyo 1ST Division.

To commemorate their 10th Anniversary in 1985 they wanted to arrange a tour to Wales the land that had inspired their formation. Through various contacts a letter requesting a 5-day hosted visit to BARFC landed with Phil Rees who was Chairman of BARFC at that time. Phil was apprehensive of how it would go but with the help of BARFC players, parents and supporters’ arrangements were made and the tour took place. It was a resounding social success.

World Tour 1988

Phil said, “Three months after the Superman RFC visit, he received a letter thanking the club for its hospitality and a cheque for £1,000 and an invite for the club to visit them in Japan.” In May 1985 that invitation was taken up and arrangements made by Ath club stalwart David Perry of Church Village Travel and Kevan Tee resulted in 45 players and members of the Ath jetting off from Heathrow on May 12th 1988 visiting Tokyo as part of a 3-week tour including Hong Kong, Honolulu, Hawaii and California. The tour also took in Macau and China and a day trip to Tijuana in Mexico.

The club played 1st XV fixtures against Belmont Shore, Lei Rhinos, and 1ST & 2ND XV games against Superman. It is intended in the future to provide a more comprehensive picture illustrated version of the World Tour.

Superman RFC returned to Wales in 2000 with two unusual requests ahead of the trip – a wedding and funeral that will be discussed in 2000-2005 of Club History.

Chaunay RFC France Association

In February 1986 Adrian Burt’s boss a Frenchman Henry Bousquet who was President of Chaunay Rugby Club in Paris requested the Athletic host Chaunay on the weekend of the Wales v France International. Again, the Athletic family raised their hosting game and the weekend including a low-key match on the Saturday morning was a resounding success.

The visit was reciprocated the following season with the Athletic arriving in Chaunay at Friday lunch time with a floodlit game arranged for the Friday Evening – a mistake! With the local bars acting as a magnet and a late afternoon reception held by the Mayor of Chaunay at the Town Hall it required buckets of water over the players in the changing room to get many of them on the field. It was the first time the back row of a scrum collapsed, and it was comical to see Andrew Patterson chasing an opponent around the field looking for retribution – that is except for the referee. Still a great weekend was had by all with a visit to the game the following day.

Entertainment Secretary Gareth Davies in 1985 arranged a Sponsored Golf Tournament at Maesteg Golf Club. This became an Annual event for 10 years raising much funding for the Ath – played mainly at Maesteg – but also at Pyle & Kenfig Golf Course.

Mini & Juniors Founding Season – 1989-90

The club decided ahead of 1989-90 season to start a new venture with a Mini & Junior Section. Club chairman Phil Rees advertised in the Gazette for interested parents to meet him outside the Recreation Centre, Bridgend on a Sunday morning. Coinciding with the Motor Show at the Rec it was a chaotic start sorting out rugby parents and children from show visitors.

Initially Phil became M&J Chairman and had to cope with various ages until a parent John Edwards assisted with coaching and then others came on board. With the assistance of others notably future M&J Treasurer Mal Evans, future M&J Secretary Alan Betty, Club Secretary Roy Huntley, John Maher, Glyn Rees, Paul Wolsey and Pat Watts along with some parents who coached their age groups, a few sides including the U12’s run by Roy and Glyn and including as a player current M&J Chairman Dean Brown started the season 1989-90.Club Secretary Roy Huntley has continued to represent the Senior Committee at M&J meetings.

During the season other age groups were formed and started playing, so by the end of season 1989-90 the club had age groups at U8, U9, U10, U11, U12 & U14 captained by Yrineo Camparo. The U12’s won the Pentyrch 7’s in their first year.

Further progression will be discussed in 1990-95 report.

A full M&J History will be written in due course as the Club now run one of Britain’s best organised and successful M&J Sections with over 300 players from U7 -U16 and even a newly formed Infants Aged 3-6 section.

1985-90 Playing Records

In 85-86 the 2ND XV won the District 2nd XV Cup Final defeating Tondu 20-11 in the Final with tries from Nigel Denis and Alan Smith and 3 pens and a D.G from Ross Walker. They beat Maesteg Celtic 20-4 in the S.F.

In 1987-88 the 3RD XV drew the Lynn Sports Final 13-13 against Pyle, while the Youth were defeated 21-9 by Pencoed in the S.F stage of the League Cup and lost the District Cup final against Maesteg Celtic. It was also noted that an Ath U16 side played 2 matches home and away against Kenfig Hill losing 0-4 and 0-14.

By season 86-87 the Athletic were now full WRU Members and entered Div 3 of the Central Glamorgan League. Successive promotions saw then reach Div 1 of that league in Season 89-90.

Also, in 88-89 the 1ST XV won the Central League Division 2 Championship and was beaten Finalists in the Silver Ball Competition losing 35-12 to Llantrisant on the Brewery Field. Martin Morris scored the Ath try with a conversion and 2 penalties from Huw Hathaway. They defeated Pyle 15-12 in the S.F with another Martin Morris try and a Pen Try, with Huw Hathaway converting the tries and adding a penalty. They won all their League qualifying Silver Ball games Cefn Cribbwr 23-6, Briton Ferry 22-9, Porthcawl 23-10, Tonmawr 38-0, British Steel 38-0, Cefn Cribbwr 56-11, Briton Ferry 12-3, Porthcawl 23-15, Tonmawr 42-3 and British Steel 54-3.

That season Martin Miller scored 28 tries and Guy Evans 25 tries, while Huw Hathaway weighed in with 267 points.

1n 88-89 the 2nd XV competing in the Groes Faen Motors Merit League won the Enoch Lewis Cup defeating Pencoed 18-12 in the Final through tries for Rob Harry and Ian Lewis and 2 conversions and a penalty from Andrew Gregory and a Richard Dyke dropped goal. They were defeated 17-3 by Llanharan in the Groes Faen Merit Table Play Off Final.

In 88-89 the 3rd XV was defeated by 24-15 by Bridgend Sports in the Vale Design Cup Final. Mark Jarrett scored 2 tries and Ross Walker 2 conversion and a penalty.

In 88-89 the Youth in a disappointing season had a remarkable double win over Aberavon Quins by 100-0 and 76-6. The U21 went out of the District Cup losing their Semi Final 14-9 to Pyle.

In 89-90 the Athletic reached the 4TH Round of the Schweppes Cup with wins 31-13 away at Alltwen, 26-19 home to Aberaman and a hard fought 13-9 away win at Pontypool United. Their reward was a much-hyped away tie at mighty Cardiff on Dec 16th, 1989. A large crowd of Ath supporters swelled the Arms Park crowd as the team did the club proud, matching their high quality in most phases. It took the brilliance of Wales centre Mark (Ringo) Ring to undo the Athletic on the day going down 28-16. 3 tries from Martin Miller, Gary Sheridan, and Lee Davies and 2 Martin Morris conversions shocked their illustrious opponents. Mark Ring was very complimentary of the Athletics’ display in the clubhouse following the game.

Ath team that day Huw Hathaway, Guy Evans, Paul Rees, Mike Miller, Martin Miller, Richard Dyke, Gary Sheridan, Haydn Lewis, Keri Townley (Capt), Nigel Hancock, John Hughes, Ken Cornelius, Terry Greenslade, Gavin Hall and Lee Davies with Replacements Martin Morris and John Thomas.

In 89-90 the 2ND XV lost 27-16 in the Semi Final of the Enoch Lewis Cup.

A memorable and appreciated act in the 80’s was club committee man Graham “Cuckoo” Phillips providing half time oranges for the players and welcome cups of tea for supporters.

Ath Coach Malcolm Jelfs used to Video games and it was always a pleasure to see them in the club following games, with the banter between players great fun.

He was always a great thinker of the game as well as a tenacious forward and has kept abreast of developments in the game throughout that time. His experience shines through during games when his eagle eye and brain can quickly assess how Ath players are performing and remedy any shortcomings during a game situation.

David is among a select band of 15 players to be awarded Athletic caps and at the POY Presentation Ceremony in 2015 was awarded Club Person of the year as well as the ultimate Athletic honour of becoming a well-deserved Life Member of BARFC.

An outstanding tall and extremely fit and fast flanker. There were not many blades of grass left untrodden on a field by Andrew at the conclusion of a game. Great strength as a defender and attacking player scoring 24 tries. Remembers his debut well against Tata Steel, when straight from Youth he played alongside fellow flanker Terry Greenslade. Terry offered him the reassurance if any opposition player threatened him to just give him the nod!!

Richard Dyke – Outside Half

136 Apps, 99 1ST XV – 62 tries and 351 points

Richard also known by his other name Dean is one of the great Athletic outsides halves whose first instinct was always to run with the ball. Very quick and elusive, averaging a try almost every other game. Could also kick goals.

Set up one of the best Ath tries seen when away against Pontypool United in the Schweppes Cup he received the ball from a line out inside the Athletic 22. Instead of the safe option of kicking to touch ran around the front of the line out and the following speedy handling of the backs resulting in a try for Guy Evans that even had the Pontypool fans bursting out in applause.

Went on to play for Pontypool and Tondu.
