Bridgend Athletic 17 Bonymaen 15

It was heart in mouth time with the Athletic electing to kick a penalty into touch 5 metres from the Bonymaen try line and the referee calling final play. Trailing 15-10 it looked like the Athletics’ 11-league match winning sequence dating back to Nov 4th was coming to an end. The drive was halted a few metres from the try line. Scrum half Dan James sniped and was held on the try line but managed to get a pass away which centre Chris Price on a determined run did very well to take above his head to crash over for an equalising try.  It also brought up 500 league points for the Athletic this season. Cool hand Luke – Luke Bevan slotted the conversion to make it 12 league wins in a row and a 17-15 victory.

With the leading points scorers and try scorers in the league BARFC 487 points, 64 tries and Bonymaen 466 points and 65 tries a high scoring game was anticipated. However, in a scrappy game with a very high penalty count – especially against the Athletic who had 2 players yellow carded scoring was at a premium.

The Ath scored from a 5-metre driving line out after 5 minutes – lock Jonathon Stoker getting the try and Luke Bevan converted. It took until the 69th minute for Bonymaen to level with a penalty try from an illegal tackle. A minute later Bevan kicked a penalty which James Sturgess immediately cancelled out.

With 2 minutes remaining a blatant forward pass missed by the referee saw Bonymaen break through for wing Nathan Brooks to cross in the corner and seemingly dash Athletic hopes. It took great character for the Ath to fight back and give themselves the final opportunity to preserve their record.
