Bridgend Athletic v Bryncoch

Bowl Champions

Finals day had arrived and after a productive and positive week in training, all the players were up for the game.

After narrowly losing to Bryncoch the season before in the U15s cup semi-final, the players wanted to win this game more than any other, this put an edge on the start of the game, although the players were up for it, they were a little nervous and this showed during the first half. With the Ath pressurising the Bryncoch line on a number of occasions, they could not cross it. A Bryncoch second row was then yellow carded for an infringement just before half time The opposition’s defence was holding out but this was finally broken with vice captain and outside half Morgan Roberts drawing the last defender in and putting Gwilym John away to run into the corner to score. Sam Owen converted. Half time score Ath7, Bryncoch 0.

With the half a game ruling Athletic made their changes and all substitutes went on and the second half started. It was soon clear to see the Athletic players nerves had settled  and this showed in their play and it was not long before the Athletic scored their second try, through captain Daniel Osarigie, this was not converted Ath 12, Bryncoch 0.

The Ath were growing in confidence and were playing some smart rugby. At this stage Bryncoch were now back to full strength and they managed to notch up a try of their own, from a lineout and setting up a driving maul, they crashed over, this was unconverted.  Ath 12, Bryncoch 5.

The Ath dusted themselves down and it was not long before they crossed for their third try, with Morgan Roberts cutting through Bryncoch’s defensive line and making a break and crossing the line, he converted his own try. Ath 19, Bryncoch 5.

After the restart Captain Daniel Osarigie received a yellow card, for an infringement called by the assistant referee, then a few moments later centre Thomas Anthony was deemed offside and was also yellow carded for it being a repeat infringement.  Ath now down to thirteen men but this did not deter them and they pushed on. They defence was outstanding with players putting in some big hits.

Ath’s next try came through Winger Morgan Lawrence. At the oppositions twenty two, the ball came along the line but the final pass went to ground but it was deemed to go backwards by the referee,  Morgan Lawrence then collected the ball but he still had a lot to do, he then used his pace to cross over in the corner. This was converted by Morgan Roberts. Ath 26, Bryncoch 5.

With Ath back up to full strength and totally relaxed, they were hit with another yellow card, with Kasari Mehta penalised for not releasing.  Again the Ath pushed on and from a penalty, they kicked to touch for a lineout inside Bryncoch’s twenty two; a training ground move was called by the players. Then from the lineout a maul was formed and five back joined it, this was too much for the Bryncoch pack and when the ball was grounded, it was Morgan Roberts who came up with it. As this would be the last kick of the game and the season at U16s, Prop Iestyn Thomas was asked if he would take the conversion, as he had been slotting them over in training, so up he stepped up and put the ball straight through the middle of the posts.  Final whistle was blown.

Credit must go to Bryncoch; they stuck at and never gave up.

Well done to all players on the day.
