Bridgend Ath u11 vs Llantwit Major u11 match report

Athletic u11s 15   Llantwit major O

Bridgend athletic u11s played away to llantwit.  A fantastic performance by the Ath players as they achieved another win. They were not phased by the fact that only 11 players were available to play and this showed in their performance.

The forwards ability to crash up through the 10 channel created gaps in the field allowing the backs to take the ball up through the centre and spread it out wide to the wings.

The structure off 9 and 10 has seemed to work great so far this season and the boys are starting to show some fantastic flowing rugby.

They showed brilliant team play as every player had a touch of the ball and showed confidence against the llantwit defence. Some of the boys that have been with us since tag helped encourage one of our new players who joined this season to have a go with ball in hand, this made me proud of the team for helping those that are not as confident as others.

Great sportsmanship was shown by every player, even though this is the second big win on the bounce there was no gloating or show boating.

Thank you to llantwit major for lending us a player to make it equal sides.

Today’s performance made me extremely proud of not just their skill set but their outstanding attitude as individuals.

Under 13’s match report

Despite the wet weather over the last few days the U13’s managed to get their match against Tonmawr underway on the A48 pitch.

It didn’t take long for the Athletic forwards and backs to link together with some strong clearing out and good handling, despite the conditions, to put Rhys Hockings in at the corner.

The Atheltic continued to make some good chances in the rest of the half but with some silly errors and soft penalties conceded they just didn’t take any of them again. Tonmawr then started to take control up front with some aggressive running off their set pieces and managed to crash over for a couple of scores, both being converted.

In the second half Tonmawr stepped up the direct running and used their pace out wide to create a number of tries. When the Ath did have the ball they were put under pressure which meant any opportunities created were spurned. Tonmawr ran out clear winners 43-5, scoring some good team tries to finish.

Score; Llandaff 10 Bridgend Ath 5

The Ath Under 16’s travelled to Llandaff for an expected tough physical game against one of the best teams in the Cardiff area.

Due to a few injuries and BCOW trials in the afternoon the Ath took the field with a few players playing out of position and a relatively small squad.

However, from the kick off the Ath took the game to a very large physical opposition. Some fantastic attack and defence from both teams made scoring extremely difficult throughout the whole of the first half resulting in the teams turning around at 0-0 half time, despite a pulsating game.

The second half started with the Ath having the upper hand and putting pressure on the Llandaff line. However stout defence allowed Llandaff to clear their lines

And a decision by the referee allowed Llandaff to run the ball from their 22 despite an obvious penalty; however fantastic running play by their centre enable him to score a length of the field try converted by their outside half.

This however spurred the Ath on and a period of pressure on Llandaff ensued. A fantastic tackle by centre Ben Thomas saw him drive a much larger player backwards fully 10 metres resulting in a penalty being awarded just outside the Llandaff 22. A quick tap by Captain Ryan Neagle saw the ball make its way to hooker Elliott Key; seeing the defence drifting a quick show and go saw him smashing through the opposition and showing immense strength crashing over the line for his 3rd try in 4 games; the conversion attempt unfortunately striking the post.

The Ath continued to press and looked the far more dangerous team, however in the last 5 minutes Llandaff were awarded a penalty just outside the Ath 22.Realising that they could not breach the Heroic Ath defence, they elected to take the 3 points.

Further pressure from the Ath again ensued however they could not get over the line to score any more points.

All in all a fantastic game of rugby by both teams; a heroic effort by the Ath with various players playing out of position- every single player performing at the top of his game. Special mention has to go to diminutive centre Ben Thomas who tackled like a demon all day, smashed big forwards out of rucks and jackled like a 7!!

Every single player who took the field today was an absolute credit to themselves and the Ath- well done guys!!
