Newcastle Emlyn 2nd XV 8 Bridgend Athletic 2nd XV 15
Welsh Conference West – Sat Sept 9th 2017
Bridgend Athletic RFC have decided to test themselves this season playing at a higher than District level by competing in a new National Welsh Conference West Division.
They travelled to Newcastle Emlyn and came away with a very creditable 15-8 victory.
The first Athletic try came when a series of forward drives set up space for a training ground backs move, culminating in debutant wing Kieran Waagness racing over from 30 metres out.
Despite good defence from the forwards led by Gareth Bartlett and Lewis Taylor the team were disappointed to concede a try from a Newcastle Emlyn forward surge just before half time.
Poor discipline then allowed Emlyn to take an 8-5 lead with a penalty.
Lloyd Pemberton came on for the last quarter and made an immediate impact. He was held up just short of the line. From the resultant ruck the Athletic set up a series of thrusts and when the ball again reached Pemberton he sold a dummy to create space and his strength took him over the line with two defenders on his back. Stand in skipper Scott Jones nailed the conversion to open a 12-8 lead. Newcastle Emlyn were penalised for indiscipline following the try. The Athletic found touch near the corner and from the resultant play Scott Govan launched an excellent 40 metredrop goal from the touchline to seal a 15-8 victory.
This was a great result from an excellent all-round team performance, with special mention forbacks Luke Yardley and centre John Taylor in defence when Emlyn came out hard in the second half. It was also encouraging in the team numbers who turned out for the long journey west.
