Pencoed Youth 6 Bridgend Athletic 22

Defending Ospreys, A league Champions Bridgend Athletic Youth made it 3 bonus point wins in their 3 league outings so far, this season defeating close neighbours Pencoed by 22 points to 6.

 

In a tight first half the only try came from a break from outstanding Athletic centre Caine Woolerton allowing the supporting flanker and captain Joe Grabham to run in from 30 metres. The other scores came from an Athletic Matthew Hobby penalty and two from Pencoed’s Harry Hopkins, to give the Athletic an 8-6 half time lead.

 

The Athletic line out with Tom Davies superb was providing plenty of good ball, and their defence was also excellent to keep their line secure throughout. The Athletic also had a good set piece and scrum with props Callum Swinford and Morgan Clemett and hooker Chris Crupton   doing well against heavier opponents.

 

 The Athletics second try came from a training ground move from a scrum with a switch move allowing wing Sam Palmer to run a great angle and although tackled just short of the line stretched his arm out for a determined try.

 

The final Athletic try came from a wraparound move from a line out with Morgan Roberts linking with influential centre Joe Patterson to send full back Levi Hallet racing over for an excellent try.Matthew Hobby converted both tries.

 

Despite the victory Head Coach Lee Grabham was frustrated that more fine moves ended without reward as his team were not clinical in finishing. He remarked when we click the team will be formidable.
