Bridgend Athletic 2nd XV 11 Brackla 1st XV 3

Welsh Bowl Cup Rd 1 – Sat Sept 16th 2017

 

By virtue in competing in the Welsh Conference for clubs above Div 1 of the National League Bridgend Athletic 2ndXV can now compete in the Welsh Bowl against first teams at 3rd Division or below level. They progressed to the 2nd Round of the competition after overcoming local rivals Brackla 1st XV 11-3.

 

The Athletic with many players out of their normal position started at a frantic pace controlling the opening exchanges. The ever-reliable veteran prop Ian Holman giving the set pieces a sound base. However, a lapse of concentration allowed Brackla to shake off their defensive shackles and launch an attack that led to them opening the scoring through a penalty goal. Just before half time the Athletic at last got their forwards going through the phases to create space for a try wide out by full back Lyndsey MaCausland to give the Athletic a 5-3 half time lead.

 

The Athletic and Brackla with several experienced forwards both showed good defences to prevent any further tries. Athletics’ outside half Scott Jones two penalties secured a hard-won victory.

 

This week the Athletic2nd XV entertain Llandovery 2nd XV in the Welsh Conference.

 

1ST XV club captain Ben Howe has urged more of the 2nd XV to join the 1st XV in training sessions which will only benefit both sides providing competition in both training sessions and showcasing potential 1st XV talent – especially
