Bridgend Athletic RFC Mini &Junior Round Up – Sunday April 21st

Only the Athletic U15’s away at Merthyr on Friday night and the U16’S on tour at a tournament in Holland were in action Easter weekend.

The Ath Under 15's travelled to the Wern in Merthyr for a Friday night fixture as it was Easter weekend. On a perfect night for running rugby and excellent playing surface it was looking to be a cracker.

From the kick off the Ath were put under enormous pressure with some clever kicking from the Merthyr scrum half but the Ath defended their try line like their lives depended on it. Turning Merthyr possession over and counter attacking from their own try line the Ath scored the first try followed by another in quick succession.

Merthyr struck back with some pick and goes from the ruck using their very big pack but the Ath started finding weaknesses in the Merthyr defence and scored another try before half time.

With a brief chat at the break the emphasis was to move the ball wide as that's where the opponent’s weakness was perceived. It didn't take long for the Ath to run in several well worked tries with forwards also getting in on the score sheet. The Ath pack looked fitter and more mobile and late into the second half this was the case with the Ath running out clear worthy winners.

Try scorers were Luke Griffiths, Harper Chamberlain, Callum Duckett, Tom Clarke x2, Lochie Baron x2 with 3 converted by Evan Beach. Full time score Merthyr 17 - Bridgend Athletic 41

The Ath 16’s travelled to Hilversum RFC in Holland for their annual tournament and started it off by playing the hosts, Hilversum.

The Ath started at a furious pace and the opposition did not touch the ball for the first 5 minutes. Constant pressure and barnstorming runs from forwards and backs eventually resulted in a fantastic try for centre Tom Florence which he converted himself.

The rest of the match was also dominated by the Ath. However, they came up against a very organised strong defence and could not quite break through to score. First game won by 7-0.

Next up were a strong English outfit, however the Ath again piled on the pressure. A great break from Michael Gillette saw him break through and feed Callum Reed who stormed through to score and narrowly missed the conversion. Again, the Ath dominated territory and possession, however, again could not turn pressure into points Final score 5-0 to the Ath

Unfortunately, by this time The Ath has suffered injuries to Fynn Mordecai, Harrison Morgan, Tom Davies, Euan Rees and Thom Lewis who ended up in hospital after fracturing his hand. Due to these unfortunate occurrences the Ath had no  option but to withdraw from the tournament.

Hilversum ended up losing narrowly in the final and there is no doubt that had the Ath not suffered the injuries they would have come close to winning the tournament. All in all, a fantastic tour and great experience for all the boys (and the Dads!)

It is hoped the walking wounded recover by this coming Sunday April 28th when they play in the Ospreys U16 Cup Final against Gowerton at Llandarcy, k.o. 12pm.
