Bridgend Athletic Youth 0 Plauzane Youth 24 Friendly – French Tour Fixture

Bridgend Athletic Youth hosted Plauzane Youth French Touring Side – Tuesday April 9th. This is the first tour the Northern Brittany Youth side have undertaken and brought 44 players with them.

Plauzane RFC found fame in Rugby World as France’s most remote side – situated in Normandy with the Nantes region nearly 200 miles away being their local senior “derby.” The club was founded in 1979 by Mr Guillaune Renault who was President until 2 years ago and is currently U18 Team Manager.

Like the Athletic Plauzane attract a high junior following with over 160 youngsters taking part and over 80% of their senior side have come through their junior ranks. The town of Plauzane is twinned with our close neighbours Pencoed whose twinning committee were represented at the match and post-match celebrations in the Athletic clubhouse.

A well-coached and flamboyant Plauzane were generally older and bigger than a young Athletic side and started at a high intensity that threatened to blow away the Athletic youngsters crossing for two tries – one converted inside the first 5 minutes. Fortunately, the Athletic steadied the ship and grew into the game. Plauzane crossed for a third first half try to lead 19-0 at the interval. Within 10 minutes of the second half the tourists scored a fourth try to lead 24-0. Plauzane try scorers were Guideau Tuil 2 and Max Percherin 2 with Hugo Le Guennel converting two of the tries.

With rolling subs allowed both sides gave most of their squads a game. The Athletic used 28 players including 11 of the U16 side that will compete in the Ospreys U16 final on April 28th. The remainder of the game was evenly contested. A good experience for a young Athletic side going forward.

The real winner was the camaraderie enjoyed in a group photo after the game and later at the Athletic clubhouse. Among the awards the Plauzane club founder Mr Renault presented BARFC via head coach Mr Chris Thomas with a dual crested club shield as a memento of the occasion.
