Resounding win for 2s

Bridgend Athletic 2nd XV’s fifth consecutive 2017 victory moved them to 2nd place in the Mid Glamorgan Premier League scoring 6 tries in a 42-0 victory at the Welfare Ground Llanharan. Outside half Scott Jones converted all 6 tries – 3 from the touchline and weighed in with a try for a 17 point match haul. Wing Andrew Tyler made his 100th 2nd XV appearance for the club.
 
Hooker Lee Murphy who was prominent throughout set up field position for the opening try with a number of ball carries into the Llanharan 22. The ball was won from a ruck with good work by props Lewis Dando and Wayne Fooks and moved along the line for scrum half Aled Thomas to feed No 8 Rob Davies to bulldoze his way over.
 
A back movement involving centres Chris Price and Tom Jenkins saw full back Nick Jones enter the line and create space and an overlap for wing Liam Phillips to cross in the corner to give the Athletic a 14-0 half time lead.

Llanharan dominated the opening period of the second half and made a huge effort at forward to cross the Athletic line. Determined defence with back row forwards Aaron Mordecai and Jacob David prominent kept them out. Having weathered the storm good tight work from locks Ben Cording and Harry Griffiths just inside their own half saw the ball moved along the line. Once again Nick Jones entered the line and demonstrated to his fellow backs how to draw a man and create an overlap to again release Phillips to run in from half way. Substitutes Hywel Cosby, Simon Mustoe, Jamie Doherty in the pack and Ben Howe on the wing then joined the action.
 
The Athletic crossed for a further 3 tries in a five minute spell. First Scott Jones chipped over the defence to win the touchdown. Scrum half Aled Thomas took a quick tap penalty on half way, broke clear and chipped the full back only to be illegally prevented from scoring resulting in a penalty try. Wing Ben Howe then broke from 40 metres out to run in unopposed to complete the scoring.
 
Next up for the Athletic2nd XV is an Enoch Lewis cup semi-final away at league leaders Kenfig Hill on the 18th February, while the 1st XV visit Trebanos on the same day.
